Axel's take: 8.6/10

A strong South Amsterdam base if you can live with tiny rooms. a design-led 4-star with compact rooms near Amsterdam Zuid, scored for what it is.

citizenM Amsterdam South is a design-led 4-star that puts big beds and sociable lounges ahead of bedroom space. We'd pick it for a short business trip or a city break with easy transport links rather than canal-side atmosphere. Booking.com and Expedia guests consistently praise cleanliness, comfortable beds and genuinely helpful staff, despite the self-service check-in. Amsterdam Zuid station is a short walk away, making airport connections and trips into the centre straightforward.

The main compromise is the 14-square-metre room: luggage space is tight, and the in-room glass shower and toilet pods offer less privacy than a conventional bathroom. Recent guests still flag that layout, even when otherwise delighted. Tablet controls won't suit everyone, either. The hotel's 24-hour canteen and inviting communal spaces help, but we'd skip it for a spacious romantic retreat or sharing with someone you don't know well.

• Best for: solo travelers on short city breaks; Zuidas business trips; couples comfortable sharing compact spaces

• Watch out for: tiny rooms with limited luggage space; limited bathroom privacy; outside the historic centre

• Location: Near Amsterdam Zuid station, convenient for Zuidas and airport connections rather than canal-side sightseeing.

• Rooms: Compact 14-square-metre rooms with large king beds, tablet controls and glass bathroom pods.

• Cleanliness: A consistent strength across Booking.com ratings and recent Expedia guest reviews.

• Service: Guests repeatedly praise welcoming staff and hands-on help with self-service check-in.

• Amenities: Art-filled lounges, free Wi-Fi and a 24-hour canteen/bar; buffet breakfast is available.

• Fees and surprises: Breakfast costs extra unless included; no on-site parking, and Marriott lists housekeeping upon request.
