Axel's take: 8.8/10

A strong canal-side luxury pick, provided you like your design unconventional. a design-led 5-star boutique hotel on the Prinsengracht canal, scored for what it is.

Andaz Amsterdam is a design-led 5-star boutique hotel in a former public library, with Marcel Wanders interiors that favor playful Dutch imagery over traditional grandeur. It’s a strong pick for exploring on foot without sacrificing comfort. Booking.com and Expedia guests consistently praise the location, cleanliness and welcoming staff; recent reviews also highlight comfortable rooms and the cocktail bar. The garden, spa and round-the-clock gym round out a convincing city-hotel offering.

The main compromise is room design: sinks sit openly in the bedroom, although toilets and showers are enclosed. Choose your outlook carefully, too—not every room faces the canal, and some overlook the internal atrium. A few recent guests report slow or muddled breakfast service, but that is a minority view against substantial praise. We’d skip it if you want conventional bathroom privacy or restrained, traditional luxury.

• Best for: design-loving couples; walkable canal-belt sightseeing; travelers who prefer informal luxury

• Watch out for: open bedroom vanity layout; some rooms face the internal atrium; occasional breakfast-service lapses

• Location: Canal-side setting with shops, restaurants and major sights accessible on foot.

• Rooms: Distinctive interiors; choose between canal, garden and atrium outlooks, and check the bathroom layout.

• Cleanliness: A consistent strength across Booking.com scores and recent Expedia guest reviews.

• Service: Usually warm and helpful; occasional breakfast delays stand out against otherwise strong feedback.

• Amenities: Essence Spa, a 24-hour gym, garden, restaurants and cocktail bar.

• Fees and surprises: Breakfast depends on the package; parking and dog stays carry extra charges.
