Axel's take: 8.8/10

A strong luxury base for central Amsterdam, with standout breakfast and room-location caveats. a large, historic five-star luxury hotel on Dam Square, scored for what it is.

This historic five-star Anantara is a strong pick for travelers who want Amsterdam on their doorstep without sacrificing full-service comfort. Booking.com and Expedia guests consistently praise the central location, cleanliness and helpful staff; recent reviews also single out comfortable rooms and the extensive breakfast. The glass-roofed Wintergarden gives breakfast real character, while The White Room, cocktail bar, spa and gym round out a convincing luxury offering.

The trade-off is the setting: Dam Square is busy, and some street-facing rooms can catch late-night noise, although many guests report quiet stays. We'd request a quieter room rather than assume every outlook sleeps equally well. Breakfast isn't included in every booking, and parking costs extra. Choose it for sightseeing convenience and polished hotel facilities; skip it if an intimate canal-side atmosphere matters more than being right in the action.

• Best for: first-time Amsterdam visitors; couples wanting full-service comfort; travelers who prioritize breakfast

• Watch out for: late-night noise in some street-facing rooms; busy Dam Square setting; breakfast and parking can cost extra

• Location: Opposite the Royal Palace on Dam Square, with trams nearby and Centraal roughly ten minutes away on foot.

• Rooms: Contemporary, comfortable rooms; layout and exposure vary, so request a quieter location if sleep-sensitive.

• Cleanliness: A clear strength across Booking.com ratings and recent Expedia guest feedback.

• Service: Warm, helpful staff earn broad praise; occasional arrival or restaurant-service lapses are not the dominant picture.

• Amenities: Wintergarden breakfast, The White Room, cocktail bar, spa and gym support its luxury positioning.

• Fees and surprises: Check breakfast inclusion and city-tax treatment; valet parking and pet stays carry additional charges.
