Axel's take: 9.2/10

A standout canal-house hotel where thoughtful service matches the setting. a historic 4-star boutique hotel on Amsterdam’s Herengracht canal, scored for what it is.

Ambassade is a historic 4-star boutique hotel spread across connected canal houses on the Herengracht. It’s a strong pick for travelers who want Amsterdam character without sacrificing comfort. Original CoBrA art, a library bar and individually decorated rooms give it personality, while Booking.com and Expedia guests consistently praise the cleanliness, comfortable beds and exceptionally helpful staff. Breakfast earns repeated praise, too, and the Nine Streets location makes exploring on foot easy.

The trade-off is the building itself: room sizes and layouts vary, and the lift doesn’t eliminate every staircase. Some rooms feel compact; canal-facing rooms can pick up street noise. Breakfast isn’t included with every booking, and parking is limited and charged separately. We’d skip it if you need guaranteed step-free access or prefer spacious, standardized rooms.

• Best for: couples seeking canal-house character; art and book lovers; travelers exploring Amsterdam on foot

• Watch out for: stairs even on some lift-served routes; variable room sizes and layouts; possible street noise in canal-facing rooms

• Location: Central Herengracht setting near the Nine Streets, with shops, restaurants and sights walkable.

• Rooms: Individually decorated and comfortable; confirm room size, canal view and stair access before booking.

• Cleanliness: Strong cleanliness ratings across Booking.com and Expedia, reinforced by recent guest praise.

• Service: Warm, attentive staff and helpful recommendations are the clearest recurring strengths.

• Amenities: Original art, library bar and Brasserie Ambassade; breakfast is a frequently praised highlight.

• Fees and surprises: Breakfast inclusion varies; paid off-site parking requires reservation, and the hotel warns of city-center roadworks affecting access.
