Axel's take: 8.3/10

A strong sightseeing base, with clean, stylish rooms but limited room to spread out. an upscale, boutique-style hotel opposite Grant Park, scored for what it is.

Le Méridien Essex Chicago is an upscale, boutique-style hotel opposite Grant Park, and we'd choose it for sightseeing rather than lavish facilities. Tripadvisor and Expedia guests consistently praise the cleanliness, comfortable beds and helpful staff. The location puts the Art Institute, lakefront and Museum Campus within walking reach, while Grant Park Bistro makes eating downstairs convenient. Some rooms offer rewarding park and lake views, but don't assume every category does.

The main compromise is space: rooms can feel tight for two people with luggage, and the small lobby isn't somewhere to linger. Service earns strong praise overall, although some guests describe uneven front-desk handling. Expedia lists a nightly destination fee and an incidental deposit; valet parking also costs extra. We'd skip it for a roomy family stay or a luxury-hotel experience built around extensive facilities.

• Best for: couples on sightseeing breaks; museum and lakefront visitors; solo city travelers

• Watch out for: compact rooms and lobby; destination fee and incidental deposit; views depend on room category

• Location: Opposite Grant Park, with museums, lakefront walks and public transit nearby.

• Rooms: Stylish and comfortable but often compact; book a view category if the outlook matters.

• Cleanliness: A consistent strength across Tripadvisor and recent Expedia guest feedback.

• Service: Usually friendly and helpful, with some reports of inconsistent front-desk handling.

• Amenities: Grant Park Bistro, a fitness center and room service; better for exploring than lingering.

• Fees and surprises: Nightly destination fee, incidental deposit and paid valet parking; confirm inclusions before arrival.
