Axel's take: 8.9/10

A strong Gold Coast choice for stylish rooms and genuinely helpful service. a design-led luxury boutique hotel in the Gold Coast, scored for what it is.

Viceroy Chicago is a design-led luxury boutique hotel in the Gold Coast, and we'd put it high on the list for a grown-up city break. Tripadvisor and Expedia guests consistently praise the helpful staff, clean rooms and walkable restaurant-and-shopping location. Comfortable beds, distinctive interiors and floor-to-ceiling windows give it more personality than a conventional business hotel. Somerset restaurant and the rooftop lounge round out the appeal.

The compromises are worth knowing: there's a mandatory nightly amenities fee, valet parking costs extra, and the small rooftop pool is better for a dip than serious swimming. It's seasonal and currently closed following its October 12 closing date. Some Tripadvisor guests report housekeeping lapses, though the broader cleanliness picture remains strong. We'd skip it if year-round swimming or a fee-free stay matters most.

• Best for: couples on a city break; shopping and restaurant weekends; travelers who prefer boutique style

• Watch out for: mandatory nightly amenities fee; small, seasonal rooftop pool; extra-charge valet parking

• Location: Walkable Gold Coast setting near restaurants, luxury shopping and the Magnificent Mile.

• Rooms: Distinctive interiors, comfortable beds and floor-to-ceiling windows; entry rooms start at 337 square feet.

• Cleanliness: Strong praise across sources outweighs occasional reports of missed housekeeping.

• Service: Friendly, accommodating staff are among the most consistent guest compliments.

• Amenities: Somerset, Pandan rooftop lounge, fitness center and a seasonal rooftop pool, currently closed.

• Fees and surprises: Mandatory nightly amenities fee, paid valet parking and a separate city tourism assessment.
