Axel's take: 8.3/10

A strong downtown base with helpful staff, comfortable rooms and some street noise. a practical 3-star hotel in lively River North, scored for what it is.

This 3-star Courtyard is a strong pick for exploring Chicago without paying for luxury extras. The Riverwalk, Michigan Avenue, restaurants and the Grand Red Line station are within easy walking reach. Recent Tripadvisor and Expedia guests repeatedly praise helpful staff, clean rooms and comfortable beds. Marriott advertises renovated rooms, and recent reviews generally back up the refreshed condition. An indoor pool, gym and outdoor sundeck add useful extras for this class.

The main trade-off is the lively setting: street noise reaches some rooms, though other guests report quiet stays. Ask for a higher-floor room away from the street if sleep matters most. Breakfast is not included, and valet parking is expensive. We'd choose it for a car-free sightseeing or business trip; light sleepers seeking reliable hush should look elsewhere.

• Best for: car-free city breaks; business travelers; families wanting an indoor pool

• Watch out for: street noise in some rooms; expensive valet parking; breakfast not included

• Location: Walkable River North base near dining, the Riverwalk and Grand Red Line station.

• Rooms: Renovated, generally comfortable rooms; street-facing rooms can be noisy.

• Cleanliness: Consistent recent praise across Tripadvisor and Expedia.

• Service: Friendly, helpful front-desk staff are a recurring strength.

• Amenities: Indoor pool, gym, outdoor sundeck and an on-site Hunan restaurant.

• Fees and surprises: Breakfast costs extra; valet and pet fees apply, with vehicle restrictions for valet.
