Axel's take: 8.3/10

A strong Surry Hills base, with friendly service and rooms worth choosing carefully. a compact, limited-service 4-star boutique hotel near Sydney Central, scored for what it is.

57Hotel is a compact 4-star boutique hotel in Surry Hills, better for exploring Sydney than spending the day indoors. We'd pick it for the short walk to Central Station, nearby restaurants and consistently praised staff. Recent Tripadvisor and Expedia guests repeatedly describe clean, comfortable rooms and welcoming service. The disco-themed touches add personality, while complimentary morning pastries, fruit and round-the-clock lobby coffee are useful extras.

The main compromise is space: the hotel lists its Single at 13 square metres and Twin Shoebox at 14, so room category matters. Bathroom privacy also draws complaints on Expedia and Booking.com, particularly about glass doors and open layouts. Breakfast is a light grab-and-go offering, not a full buffet. It's a strong choice for transport-focused city breaks; we'd skip it if generous rooms and conventional bathroom privacy are priorities.

• Best for: solo travelers on city breaks; rail-connected sightseeing; Surry Hills dining and nightlife

• Watch out for: very compact entry-level rooms; bathroom privacy in some layouts; light breakfast rather than a full buffet

• Location: About five minutes on foot from Central Station, with Surry Hills cafés and pubs nearby.

• Rooms: Comfortable but category-dependent; Singles and Shoebox twins are particularly small.

• Cleanliness: A consistent strength across Tripadvisor, Booking.com and recent Expedia reviews.

• Service: Friendly, helpful reception staff earn repeated praise across sites.

• Amenities: Free Wi-Fi, light morning bites, 24-hour lobby coffee and a staffed 24-hour reception.

• Fees and surprises: Expedia lists a damage deposit, paid offsite parking and a 10am checkout; late checkout costs extra.
