Axel's take: 8.2/10

A strong pick for roomy, practical stays rather than four-star polish. A practical 4-star, motel-style hotel with kitchenettes on Auckland’s city fringe, scored for what it is.

Edit Auckland Greenlane is a small, motel-style 4-star that makes more sense as a practical base than a pampering hotel. We'd choose it for business, appointments or Showgrounds events: kitchenettes, comfortable beds and generally generous rooms make it good value. Booking.com and Expedia guests consistently praise the space, cleanliness and friendly staff, with recent Expedia reviews reinforcing those strengths.

The trade-offs are straightforward: there's no lift, parking is limited enough that the hotel recommends reserving ahead, and downtown sightseeing requires transport. Some October 2026 guests on Itinera also mention damp smells in communal areas, although room-cleanliness feedback remains largely positive. Breakfast is continental, so check whether your booking includes it. We'd skip it for a full-service city break; for a useful room near Greenlane's venues, it's a strong pick.

• Best for: Business and appointment trips; Showgrounds event visitors; Travelers wanting a kitchenette

• Watch out for: Stairs and no lift; Limited parking; reserve ahead; Some recent reports of damp-smelling communal areas

• Location: Handy for motorway access and Greenlane venues, but not a downtown walking base.

• Rooms: Generally spacious, with comfortable beds, kitchenettes and air conditioning; the Snug is smaller.

• Cleanliness: Strong overall guest feedback, tempered by recent damp-smell reports in hallways and stairwells.

• Service: Friendly, helpful staff are a consistent strength across booking sites.

• Amenities: Free Wi-Fi, kitchenettes, guest laundry and continental breakfast cover the practical basics.

• Fees and surprises: Breakfast may cost extra; reserve parking and request an accessible room directly if needed.
