Axel's take: 8.3/10

A characterful theater-district base with welcoming staff, but compact rooms and extra fees. a historic, Art Deco 4-star in Chicago’s Loop, scored for what it is.

The Allegro is a historic, Art Deco 4-star whose strongest assets are its Loop location and hospitality. It’s a strong pick for theater nights and sightseeing, especially if you prefer a distinctive lobby to a generic business-hotel setting. Recent Expedia and Tripadvisor guests repeatedly praise helpful staff, clean rooms and comfortable beds. The overall picture is reassuringly positive, rather than flawless.

The main compromise is space: small bedrooms and particularly tight bathrooms recur across reviews, including otherwise enthusiastic ones. Some guests also find the furnishings tired. A mandatory daily destination fee and expensive parking weaken the value, while restaurant hours warrant checking before relying on hotel meals. There’s a fitness center but no pool. We’d choose it for a short, mostly out-and-about stay; skip it if spacious rooms or full-service luxury are priorities.

• Best for: theatergoers; couples on short city breaks; Loop business travelers

• Watch out for: compact rooms and tight bathrooms; daily destination fee and costly parking; limited restaurant hours

• Location: Convenient for the Cadillac Palace Theatre, Loop offices, nearby transit and the Riverwalk.

• Rooms: Comfortable beds and distinctive decor; small layouts and some tired furnishings temper the upscale feel.

• Cleanliness: A consistent strength in recent guest feedback, including strong Expedia cleanliness ratings.

• Service: Welcoming, helpful staff are among the most consistently praised features.

• Amenities: Legato Lounge, a 24-hour gym and lobby refreshments; no pool, and dining hours vary by day.

• Fees and surprises: Mandatory daily destination fee; parking, pets and some early or late checkout arrangements cost extra.
