Axel's take: 8.5/10

A friendly sightseeing base, provided you choose your room carefully. a compact 3-star boutique hotel near Leidseplein, scored for what it is.

Krisotel is a compact 3-star boutique hotel near Leidseplein, and a strong pick for travelers who spend their days exploring rather than lounging in their room. Booking.com and Expedia guests consistently praise the helpful staff, cleanliness and walkable location. Recent reviews also appreciate the breakfast and complimentary all-day coffee and tea. It delivers the essentials well, with air-conditioning and private bathrooms rather than extensive facilities.

Room choice is the catch. The smallest doubles are genuinely tight; the hotel lists a narrow 120-centimeter bed. Street-facing rooms can pick up late-night bar and traffic noise, although other guests report quiet stays. Souterrain rooms sit below street level and require steep stairs, with no lift access. We'd choose a larger, non-street-facing room and skip the basement categories if stairs are difficult.

• Best for: couples on sightseeing breaks; solo travelers wanting a private room; friends exploring museums and nightlife

• Watch out for: very compact entry-level rooms; late-night noise in street-facing rooms; steep stairs to basement rooms; no lift access

• Location: Near Leidseplein, with trams, restaurants and museums within walking distance.

• Rooms: Air-conditioned and compact; compare categories carefully, especially bed size and basement access.

• Cleanliness: A consistent strength across Booking.com and recent Expedia reviews.

• Service: Friendly, helpful reception staff are one of the clearest recurring positives.

• Amenities: Free Wi-Fi, all-day coffee and tea, buffet breakfast and 24-hour reception; lift excludes basement rooms.

• Fees and surprises: Breakfast may cost extra; city tax applies, the hotel is cashless and parking is off-site.
