River Hotel is a practical 4-star in historic Mather Tower, better treated as a comfortable sightseeing base than a luxury stay. Its riverfront position makes the Riverwalk, Michigan Avenue and downtown attractions easy to explore on foot. Tripadvisor and Expedia guests consistently praise the helpful staff, and cleanliness is generally a strength. Free coffee, tea and water-refill stations add useful everyday value.

The compromises are compact rooms, dated finishes and recurring elevator problems: summer and September 2026 guests reported breakdowns and long waits. Check the elevator situation before booking if stairs would be difficult. Street noise also crops up, and a river view depends on the room booked.
