Axel's take on University City: #6 of 7 in Philadelphia, 6.3/10
Stay west of the river when campuses are the reason. Respectable hotels and useful campus connections support University City, but lower access, fewer nearby attractions and weak value limit its broader appeal.
University City works best when Penn, Drexel, the hospitals or an Amtrak journey shape the trip. Leafy Locust Walk, the Penn Museum, Franklin Field and the Palestra give it substance beyond business towers, while campus demand supports plenty of casual food. Recent college-tour advice sensibly favors staying here when several appointments fill the day.
It is not the simplest substitute for Center City sightseeing. The colonial district is a transit outing, and Baltimore Avenue's better-known West Philly dining stretches farther west than the station district. Choose it for a specific local purpose; otherwise, crossing the river repeatedly is an avoidable complication.
- Best for: business trips and conventions, sports fans
- Skip it if: This is a short, sightseeing-only visit; You want major-league stadium access without a transfer
- Getting around: L trains serve 30th, 34th and 40th streets; T trolleys and LUCY buses cover campus connections; from PHL, take the Airport Line directly to Penn Medicine or 30th Street, choosing the station nearest your stay.
- After dark: Campus restaurants and student bars create pockets of activity rather than one continuous late-night district.
- Rates: Typical Axel rate $321 a night · usually 9% under the public rate
