Strong punctuality, but rigid fares make price drops hard to recover

Axel rates Icelandair as a practical choice when the initial fare is competitive and your plans are firm. Its strong punctuality and disruption protections help, and Economy Light includes a carry-on. The trade-off is expensive flexibility: Economy Light cannot ordinarily change, while Economy Standard charges $250 per change on journeys originating in the USA and offers no price-drop credit.

  • Best
  • Cirium recorded 83.23% of flights arriving within 15 minutes of schedule in 2025.
  • Economy Light includes a 10 kg carry-on and a small personal item.
  • Worst
  • Economy Light does not permit ordinary voluntary booking changes.
  • Economy Standard changes cost $250 per ticket on journeys originating in the USA, plus any fare increase.
  • Exchanges into cheaper fares are prohibited, so Economy Standard provides no price-drop refund or credit.

If the fare drops after you book, can you get money back?

RarelyRepriceability 3.0/10

Rarely. Icelandair prohibits exchanges into cheaper fares, so Economy Standard produces neither cash nor credit when prices fall. Economy Light cannot ordinarily change. Economy Standard changes cost $250 per ticket for journeys originating in the USA, plus fare increases. Economy Flex waives change fees, not fare increases. Canceling and buying again is only an inferred route for eligible wholly unused Economy Flex or Saga Premium Flex tickets, or bookings within the eligible cancellation window, not promised price protection. Refundable fares exclude booking fees. Direct bookings made more than two days before departure qualify for cancellation within 24 hours, excluding ticketing fees and groups of ten or more, and the entire booking must be canceled. Outside that window, Economy Standard returns only unused government and airport taxes. Travel Credit Vouchers are not an ordinary cancellation benefit. They allow booking for eight years, with travel up to one year after booking. They cannot be extended, transferred or redeemed for cash, and use for another passenger is unconfirmed.

Axel has no repricing observations to report for Icelandair, so no sample size, observation period or savings result is available.

Fare difference on a cheaper change
Lost. Icelandair's optional-fees page explicitly requires the replacement fare to be at least equal to the ticket's current fare and prohibits changing to a cheaper fare. Therefore, Economy Standard generates neither cash nor credit from downward repricing. Strictly, the restriction prevents the cheaper-fare exchange itself rather than merely forfeiting its residual.
Same flight, lower price
No published same-flight price-drop adjustment or credit entitlement was found. Because cheaper-fare exchanges are prohibited, cancellation and a separate purchase are the available route only when the original booking qualifies for a refund: an eligible wholly unused Economy Flex or Saga Premium Flex ticket, or a booking within the eligible 24-hour window. This is an inference from the refund and exchange rules, not an explicit price-protection promise. Contact Icelandair about cancellation; no dedicated online price-drop procedure or minimum claim amount was confirmed.
Credits (Travel Credit Voucher)
Valid for booking up to eight years from issue, with travel up to one year after booking. Vouchers cannot be extended.
24-hour rule
Direct bookings across fare types, including holiday packages, qualify for cancellation within 24 hours when purchased more than two days before departure. Groups of ten or more are excluded, the entire booking must be canceled, and applicable ticketing fees are excluded. Official wording conflicts at exactly two days: the customer service plan says two or more days, while the refund and individual fare-rule pages say more than two days. No revision dates establish chronology, so use the stricter boundary. This policy is broader than the US seven-day advance-purchase minimum.
Same-day change
For Economy Standard, same-day requests fall under the published ordinary change rules: USD 250 per ticket on USA-originating journeys, plus any fare increase and subject to availability. This is not a separately verified same-day confirmed-change or standby product. Economy Light cannot ordinarily change; Economy Flex waives the change fee but not fare increases. A distinct near-departure concession is confirmed for Saga Premium Flex: the US comparison permits one change each way, requested within 48 hours before departure, to an Icelandair flight within 24 hours either side of the original departure. The Canadian official fare rules explicitly waive both the change fee and fare difference, require the same route and make the benefit subject to availability. These pages display no publication or last-updated dates; checked October 26, 2026. The general conditions require contacting the service center at least three hours before the first flight.
Schedule changes
Icelandair's US refund page provides a refund for an unacceptable schedule change delaying departure by at least five hours. Its voucher terms also cover international departure-time changes of at least five hours in either direction. Cancellation and qualifying missed same-ticket connections can also trigger refunds; rebooking or an optional voucher may be offered. Separately, US DOT rules require an original-payment refund when the traveler declines alternatives after cancellation or a significant international change, including departure at least six hours earlier, arrival at least six hours later, changed origin or destination airports, added connections or involuntary downgrade. DOT deadlines are seven business days for credit-card payments and twenty calendar days for other payments. Icelandair's five-hour policy is more favorable where applicable.

    • Commitments when the airline causes the problem: 9.0/10 · Covered by: US_DOT_refund_rule, EU261, UK261, Canada_APPR; Applicable protections depend on the route: U.S. refund rules cover flights to or from the United States; EC261 applies through Iceland's EEA passenger-rights framework; UK261 covers qualifying UK flights; and Canada's APPR covers Canadian services. Icelandair's U.S. service plan promises one night's hotel accommodation and hotel transportation when a controllable cancellation or missed connection requires an overnight stay, subject to stated exclusions. It says it will rebook passengers on other airlines in most instances, depending on circumstances and availability. These promises are not necessarily additional to statutory rights: EC261 care obligations can be broader, including during extraordinary circumstances. Refunds and disruptions

Route determines protection: U.S. DOT refund rules, EC261 through Iceland's EEA framework, UK261 or Canada's APPR. For covered U.S. cancellations or significant changes, declining alternatives entitles you to an original-payment refund, not a compulsory voucher. Legal deadlines are seven business days for card payments and 20 calendar days otherwise, although Icelandair's plan says 20 business days.

Its U.S. plan promises one night's hotel and transfers for qualifying controllable overnight disruptions, plus rebooking on other airlines in most instances, subject to availability. EC261 care can be broader. No established reporting showed routine refund delays or forced vouchers in the last two years. On August 16, 2024, the Icelandic Transport Authority upheld a $12 onboard internet reimbursement claim, not a fine. DOT recorded 1.95 refund complaints per 100,000 passengers on U.S. routes in April and May 2026.

Regulator actions since October 2021

  • July 2025, Iceland Consumer Agency (Neytendastofa): Decision 27/2025 fined Icelandair ISK 500,000 for inadequate and inconsistent information about retaining subsequent segments after skipping an earlier flight, including associated charges, and for failing to comply fully with Decision 54/2023. The approximate USD equivalent uses the July 30, 2025 rate of ISK 124.54 per USD. Source
  • August 2024, Icelandic Transport Authority (Samgöngustofa): Decision 69/2024 rejected fixed compensation for the delay of FI664 on December 23, 2023, but upheld the passenger's claim for USD 12 spent on onboard internet needed to communicate during the disruption. This was an individual expense-reimbursement ruling, not a civil fine. Source
  • December 2023, Iceland Consumer Agency (Neytendastofa): Decision 54/2023 found that Icelandair omitted important information from its carriage terms concerning no-shows and use of subsequent flight segments. The agency ordered clearer notification procedures, deadlines and disclosure of no-show charges; the decision did not impose a monetary fine. Source

Reliability

Reliability is a clear strength. Cirium's On-Time Performance Review 2025 recorded 83.23% of Icelandair flights arriving within 15 minutes of schedule across January 1 to December 31, 2025. The cancellation rate was 1.24%, calculated from its 98.76% completion factor. The network-wide report covered 39,425 flights with 99.04% tracking coverage. Those are strong results, but they describe that period rather than guarantee your flight.

Fees

Economy Light includes a 10 kg carry-on and personal item, but no checked bag. Current checked-bag and seat-selection prices are unconfirmed. Choosing a seat costs extra, while an assigned seat is free. Economy Standard includes a 23 kg checked bag. Regular seat selection is free for children aged 2 to 11 and infants under two, but adjacent family seats are not guaranteed.

Optional bags and seats can increase the total. Mandatory charges added after the first displayed fare were not confirmed. On July 30, 2025, the Iceland Consumer Agency fined Icelandair ISK 500,000 (approximately $4,015) over inadequate disclosures about keeping later flight segments and associated charges, not proof of hidden mandatory charges in current fares.

Complaints

DOT recorded 13.66 complaints per 100,000 passengers on Icelandair flights to and from the U.S. in April and May 2026, versus 14.73 for the median airline based abroad. That is slightly better than the comparison group, not an outstanding result. DOT did not report Icelandair figures for mishandled bags, wheelchairs or scooters in April, May, July and August 2026, or bumping in April to June 2026.

Loyalty program

Icelandair Saga Club's Saga Points last for the flight's calendar year and the following three calendar years, expiring December 31. This is fixed expiry, not an inactivity rule. No points devaluation was identified in the last 24 months, and award pricing is unconfirmed. Separately, Saga Premium tickets purchased after April 1, 2025 lost partner-lounge access outside Keflavík, while Saga Premium Flex retains eligible access.

Choose Icelandair if

  • Travel with firm dates and only a carry-on.
  • Value a strong recent punctuality record.
  • Find an initial fare low enough to offset limited flexibility.

Book elsewhere if

  • You expect to recover savings when fares fall.
  • You need cheap changes on journeys originating in the USA.
  • You need guaranteed adjacent family seats.

Tips

  • Choose Economy Light only when your plans are firm, because ordinary voluntary changes are not permitted.
  • Compare Economy Standard with Economy Light plus baggage charges if you need a 23 kg checked bag.
  • Skip paid seat selection in Economy Light if you can accept a seat assigned without charge.

Questions travelers ask

Does Icelandair charge change fees?

Yes, except on fares such as Economy Flex. Economy Standard costs $250 per ticket per change for journeys originating in the USA, plus any fare increase. Economy Light does not allow ordinary voluntary changes. Economy Flex has no change fee, but fare increases still apply. Changing the website currency does not change the fee determined by the journey's origin.

Can I get money back if my Icelandair fare drops?

Usually not. Icelandair prohibits exchanges into cheaper fares and publishes no same-flight price-drop credit entitlement. An eligible wholly unused Economy Flex or Saga Premium Flex ticket may be canceled and replaced with a separate purchase, subject to refund terms. Eligible direct bookings also have a 24-hour cancellation window. This route is inferred from the rules, not an airline price-protection promise.

How long do Icelandair travel credits last?

Travel Credit Vouchers allow booking for up to eight years from issue, with travel up to one year after booking. They cannot be extended, transferred, sold or redeemed for cash. Whether the holder can buy travel for another passenger is unconfirmed. These vouchers arise from qualifying disruptions or accepted airline-proposed modifications, not ordinary cancellation of non-refundable fares.

What do I get if Icelandair cancels my flight?

You may be entitled to a refund if you decline replacement travel, with the exact protections depending on your route. U.S. rules require an original-payment refund for covered cancellations, not a compulsory voucher. Icelandair's U.S. plan also promises one night's hotel and hotel transport for qualifying controllable overnight disruptions, and rebooking on other airlines in most instances, subject to availability. EC261, UK261 or Canada's APPR may add applicable rights.

How much are carry-on and checked bags on Icelandair?

Economy Light includes a carry-on up to 10 kg and a small personal item, but checked baggage costs extra. The carry-on limit is 55 × 40 × 20 cm, including handles and wheels. Current advance-online checked-bag pricing in U.S. dollars was not confirmed. Economy Standard and Economy Flex each include a 23 kg checked bag. Buying extra bags through a representative adds a booking fee.

Key facts

  • Fare difference on a cheaper change: Lost.
  • Same flight, lower price: No published same-flight price-drop adjustment or credit entitlement was found.
  • Credits (Travel Credit Voucher): Valid for booking up to eight years from issue, with travel up to one year after booking. Vouchers cannot be extended.
  • 24-hour rule: Direct bookings across fare types, including holiday packages, qualify for cancellation within 24 hours when purchased more than two days before departure.
  • Same-day change: For Economy Standard, same-day requests fall under the published ordinary change rules: USD 250 per ticket on USA-originating journeys, plus any fare increase and subject to availability.
  • Schedule changes: Icelandair's US refund page provides a refund for an unacceptable schedule change delaying departure by at least five hours.

Repriceability: 3.0/10

  • Standard fare change fee: 0.0/10 (Economy Standard: USD 250 per ticket per change for journeys originating in the USA, both between the USA and Iceland and between the USA and Europe, plus any applicable fare increase. The fee depends on journey origin, not website currency.)
  • Lowest fare flexibility: 0.0/10 (Economy Light: Ordinary voluntary booking changes are not permitted.)
  • Lower fare on the same flight: 4.0/10 (No published same-flight price-drop adjustment or credit entitlement was found. Contact Icelandair about cancellation; no dedicated online price-drop procedure or minimum claim amount was confirmed.)
  • Credit terms: 7.0/10 (Valid for booking up to eight years from issue, with travel up to one year after booking. Vouchers cannot be extended.)
  • Cancel the standard fare: 0.0/10 (Outside the eligible 24-hour window, airfare and carrier-imposed surcharges are non-refundable. Unused government and airport taxes are refundable; booking fees are not. No ordinary cancellation-for-credit entitlement is published. Upgrading to Flex does not make the original non-refundable amount refundable.)
  • Risk-free window: 10.0/10 (Direct bookings across fare types, including holiday packages, qualify for cancellation within 24 hours when purchased more than two days before departure. This policy is broader than the US seven-day advance-purchase minimum.)
  • Same-day change: 7.0/10 (For Economy Standard, same-day requests fall under the published ordinary change rules: USD 250 per ticket on USA-originating journeys, plus any fare increase and subject to availability. The general conditions require contacting the service center at least three hours before the first flight.)

  • Commitments when the airline causes the problem: 9.0/10 (Covered by: US_DOT_refund_rule, EU261, UK261, Canada_APPR; Applicable protections depend on the route: U.S. refund rules cover flights to or from the United States; EC261 applies through Iceland's EEA passenger-rights framework; UK261 covers qualifying UK flights; and Canada's APPR covers Canadian services. No general promise of additional cash compensation beyond legal entitlements was verified.)

  • First checked bag: no data, median 6.0/10 used (Economy Light includes no checked bag. Current advance-online USD pricing could not be verified because the baggage overview did not expose its detailed fee panels. Standard and Flex include one 23 kg bag. Extra bags can be purchased before check-in on eligible Icelandair-operated FI flights; representative-assisted purchases incur an additional booking fee. Pre-purchased bags are limited to 23 kg and generally non-refundable, with an express exception for eligible direct-booked Economy Flex cancellations before departure. Purchased bags transfer without additional cost on voluntary changes only if the route remains unchanged.)
  • Seat in the lowest fare: 3.0/10 (fee)
  • Children seated with a parent: 5.0/10 (Icelandair's family page says it does its best to seat families together on every flight. Its seat-selection terms say it attempts to seat passengers in the same booking together, subject to availability, and explicitly make regular seat selection free for children aged 2–11 and infants under two; More Legroom seats remain chargeable. This supports a conditional policy, not a guaranteed free adjacent adult seat for every child aged 13 or younger on every fare. The child fee exemption does not cover ages 12–13. Neither page displays a publication or last-updated date; checked October 26, 2026. Economy Light otherwise charges for seat selection and assigns an unselected seat without charge.)
