Strong punctuality, but Basic restrictions and high complaints weaken the fare
Axel sees Etihad as a reasonable choice on price when the itinerary is firm, not a flexible bargain. Its strong completion record and included cabin bag help, but Basic cannot be changed voluntarily, Value adds change costs, and U.S. complaint rates are high. Compare the total with checked bags and seats before treating the opening fare as good value.
- Best
- Cirium reports 81.06% on-time arrivals and a 0.25% cancellation rate for 2025.
- Basic includes a cabin bag weighing up to 7 kg.
- Value includes two checked bags of 23 kg each on U.S. routes.
- Worst
- Basic does not permit voluntary changes.
- Value is non-refundable outside applicable exceptions and charges for changes.
- DOT recorded 65.53 complaints per 100,000 passengers on U.S. flights in April and May 2026.
If the fare drops after you book, can you get money back?
RarelyRepriceability 3.7/10
Rarely. Etihad does not confirm refunds or credits for later price drops on the identical flight. Basic cannot be changed voluntarily. Value permits changes with a ticket-specific penalty, fare difference and a $30 Economy service fee per segment under the U.S. Modification Guide. Value is otherwise non-refundable, and whether a cheaper replacement produces cash, credit or lost value is not confirmed. For new tickets bought at least seven days before departure, request cancellation within 24 hours of issuance for a penalty-free refund, then rebook if worthwhile.
Ordinary Etihad Money expires after 12 months and is restricted to the Wallet holder, with no transfers or cash conversion. U.S.-required credits accepted instead of a cancellation or significant-change refund must last at least five years. Axel records fewer than 10 repricing attempts, with no observation period provided, so there is too little evidence to establish a savings pattern. Repricing is Axel's price-drop protection: after you book, Axel keeps watching the fare, and when the price drops Axel works to deliver the further savings to you. Repricing is included with Axel Membership.

- Fare difference on a cheaper change
- Not confirmed. Outside the qualifying cooling-off window, the current public rules do not establish whether a lower replacement fare produces cash, credit or forfeiture on Value. The carriage conditions explain collecting an increase but not returning a decrease. The undated US Customer Service Plan promises refunds of lower fare differences for changes during its qualifying 24-hour window; however, the newer cooling-off policy, updated August 27, 2026, says that concession covers refunds rather than changes. Cancellation and rebooking is the clearly supported cooling-off remedy.
- Same flight, lower price
- No current official promise was confirmed to refund or credit a later price drop on the identical booked flight. Qualifying bookings can be cancelled for a full refund within 24 hours and rebooked. Outside that window, a separate cancellation and cheaper booking follows the original ticket's refund rules, including penalties, service fees and mixed-fare restrictions; this is not a confirmed price-drop adjustment service.
- Credits (Etihad Money, held in Etihad Wallet; formerly Etihad Credit)
- Ordinary Etihad Money expires 12 months after issuance. The terms prohibit extending or reinstating expired balances, although the management FAQ describes special involuntary-change cases in which the Refunds team may re-credit an expired voucher, usually for 60 days. US-required credits accepted instead of a cancellation or significant-change refund must remain valid for at least five years. Transferable: no.
- 24-hour rule
- The cooling-off policy, updated August 27, 2026, permits penalty-free cancellation at all points of sale for new/original tickets purchased at least seven days before departure, with the refund requested within 24 hours of issuance. This includes non-refundable fares such as Basic. The newer policy expressly treats this as a cancellation/refund concession, not a free-change concession for US purchases. The US Customer Service Plan independently confirms the seven-day/24-hour cancellation protection.
- Same-day change
- Etihad's own current US Tiers and Benefits page lists Same-day flexibility among Platinum Custom Benefits, which eligible members must select before arriving at the airport. It is not a general Value-fare benefit. Its benefit-specific conditions require check-in on the original flight and a replacement departing at least four hours earlier. Neither flight may have started boarding or closed check-in. Paid extras are not refunded, special-service requests do not carry over, and the benefit is unavailable during disruptions. The page gives no publication or last-updated date for this benefit; checked October 26, 2026. The separate existence and elite eligibility are confirmed, but the public conditions do not explicitly state whether all change fees and fare differences are waived.
- Schedule changes
- Etihad's schedule-change policy, updated June 5, 2026, covers amendments more than 72 hours before departure and provides rebooking/refund options for departures moved at least 120 minutes earlier or later, missed connections, cancellations and equipment-related cabin downgrades. Its July 15, 2025 notice specifies one free change or a refund of unused sectors. Completely unused tickets receive the entire amount; partially used tickets receive the applicable unused portion, with unfulfilled ancillaries refundable. Separately, US rules require a refund when the traveler declines transportation after cancellation or a significant international change, including departure at least six hours earlier, arrival at least six hours later, airport changes, additional connections or an involuntary downgrade. Required US refunds are due within seven business days for credit cards or 20 calendar days for other payments; credit need not be accepted.

Refunds and disruptions
U.S. refund rules cover flights to or from the U.S. EU261 and UK261 generally cover Etihad departures from those jurisdictions, while Canada’s APPR applies to eligible itineraries. India and Israel also have national protections. When you decline travel after cancellation or a qualifying significant change, U.S. refunds are due within seven business days for cards or 20 calendar days otherwise, without accepting credit. For controllable missed connections, Etihad will seek transport on Etihad or another airline and provide hotel, meals and transfers where schedules require.
DOT recorded 31.1 refund complaints per 100,000 passengers in April and May 2026, versus a 4.39 median for airlines based abroad. Routine late refunds or forced vouchers were not established. On December 4, 2024, the Canadian Transportation Agency imposed C$38,300 for passenger-rights information failures and failures to provide compensation or explain nonpayment.
Regulator actions since October 2021
- December 2024, Canadian Transportation Agency: The CTA imposed a C$38,300 monetary penalty for passenger-rights information failures and 29 instances of not providing compensation or an explanation of why it was not payable within 30 days. The notice also addressed communication failures affecting delayed flight EY140 on March 28, 2024. A contemporaneous USD conversion was not verified. Source
- November 2024, Canadian Transportation Agency: The CTA imposed a C$1,000 monetary penalty. Its findings concerned a fuel surcharge not classified under Air Transportation Charges and optional-service prices displayed in U.S. dollars on Etihad's Canadian website, potentially obscuring their total cost. A contemporaneous USD conversion was not verified. Source

Reliability
Reliability is Etihad’s strongest case for booking. Cirium’s On-Time Performance Review 2025 reports 81.06% on-time arrivals across its network for calendar year 2025, with on time defined as reaching the gate within 15 minutes of schedule. The 0.25% cancellation rate is derived from Cirium’s published 99.75% completion factor, rather than a separately published cancellation figure. These are network-wide results, not figures limited to U.S. routes.
Fees
Basic includes a 7 kg cabin bag, but no checked bag. Prepaid bag prices are booking-specific in Manage My Trip, not a confirmed fixed first-bag charge. The airport extra-bag table lists $260 up to 23 kg or $300 up to 32 kg for tickets issued from April 23, 2026.
Seat selection costs extra, while check-in assignment is free. Call after booking for free adjacent seats with children under 12. There is no unconditional U.S. family-seating guarantee. On November 13, 2024, the Canadian Transportation Agency fined Etihad C$1,000 over surcharge classification and optional-service currency display. Late mandatory charges were not confirmed, but bags and selected seats can raise Basic’s final price.
Complaints
Etihad’s complaint record is a major weakness. DOT recorded 65.53 complaints per 100,000 passengers on flights to and from the U.S. in April and May 2026, versus a 14.73 median for airlines based abroad. Mishandled-bag and wheelchair figures were not reported to DOT for April, May, July and August 2026, nor bumping figures for April to June 2026. In November 2022, U.S. DOT imposed a $200,000 penalty for disability-accommodation violations.
Loyalty program
Etihad Guest miles expire after 18 months for Bronze, Silver and Gold unless eligible flying extends validity. Platinum and Emerald miles do not expire. Award pricing was not confirmed. Economy Basic earning fell from 15% to 5% for tickets issued from June 18, 2026. From November 13, 2025, Value awards became non-refundable and listed award changes and cancellations were barred inside 72 hours. Announcement dates were not confirmed.
Choose Etihad Airways if
- You have fixed dates and can travel with a 7 kg cabin bag.
- You need the checked baggage included in Value on U.S. routes.
- You value Etihad’s strong 2025 completion record over fare flexibility.
Book elsewhere if
- You expect to change a Basic booking.
- You want a confirmed refund or credit if the same flight gets cheaper.
- You prioritize a low complaint rate.
Tips
- Buy piece-based checked baggage at least 30 hours before departure to qualify for the advance-online discount.
- Leave your Basic seat unselected for free assignment at check-in, or call after booking for adjacent seats with children under 12.
- For tickets bought at least seven days before departure, request cancellation within 24 hours of issuance if a cheaper fare makes rebooking worthwhile.
Questions travelers ask
Does Etihad charge change fees?
Most changeable fares have fees, while Basic does not permit voluntary changes. Value and Comfort have ticket-specific penalties and fare differences, with a $30 Economy service fee per segment under the U.S. Modification Guide. Deluxe advertises free changes, but that guide does not explicitly exempt it from the $30 service fee. Do not assume Deluxe means a completely fee-free change.
Can I get money back if my Etihad fare drops?
Not automatically. No current official rule confirms a refund or credit when your identical booked flight becomes cheaper. For eligible tickets bought at least seven days before departure, you can request a full cancellation refund within 24 hours of issuance and rebook. Outside that window, Value is non-refundable and the treatment of a cheaper replacement fare’s residual value is not confirmed.
How long do Etihad credits last?
Ordinary Etihad Money lasts 12 months from issuance and can only be used by the Wallet holder. It cannot be transferred or converted to cash, and its terms prohibit extending expired balances. Special involuntary-change cases may allow re-crediting, usually for 60 days. Credits accepted instead of a U.S.-required cancellation or significant-change refund must last at least five years.
What do I get if Etihad cancels my flight?
On flights to or from the U.S., you are entitled to a refund if you decline replacement travel after cancellation. Required refunds are due within seven business days for credit-card payments or 20 calendar days otherwise, and you need not accept a voucher. Other rights depend on the itinerary. Etihad’s disruption policies also provide rebooking options, including another airline in qualifying cases.
How much do carry-on and checked bags cost on Etihad?
Basic includes a cabin bag up to 7 kg and 56 × 36 × 23 cm. Checked baggage costs extra, with booking-specific prepaid prices in Manage My Trip. Published airport extra-bag rates are $260 up to 23 kg and $300 up to 32 kg for tickets issued from April 23, 2026, not verified prepaid first-bag prices. Value, Comfort and Deluxe include two 23 kg checked bags on U.S. routes.

- Standard fare change fee: 4.0/10 (Value: Ticket-specific penalty and fare difference, plus the US Modification Guide's USD 30 Economy service fee per segment.)
- Lowest fare flexibility: 0.0/10 (Basic: Voluntary changes are not permitted. The temporary one-free-change concession ended for tickets issued from July 1, 2026.)
- Lower fare on the same flight: no data, median 4.0/10 used (For Economy Value, the rules do not establish whether a lower fare on the identical booked flight produces cash, credit or forfeiture after 24 hours. Value is non-refundable and changes carry fees, but no price-drop adjustment or residual-value rule is confirmed.)
- Credit terms: 7.0/10 (Ordinary Etihad Money expires 12 months after issuance. The terms prohibit extending or reinstating expired balances, although the management FAQ describes special involuntary-change cases in which the Refunds team may re-credit an expired voucher, usually for 60 days. US-required credits accepted instead of a cancellation or significant-change refund must remain valid for at least five years.; transferable: no)
- Cancel the standard fare: 0.0/10 (Non-refundable apart from eligible government taxes and applicable cooling-off or involuntary-refund exceptions.)
- Risk-free window: 10.0/10 (The cooling-off policy, updated August 27, 2026, permits penalty-free cancellation at all points of sale for new/original tickets purchased at least seven days before departure, with the refund requested within 24 hours of issuance. This includes non-refundable fares such as Basic. The newer policy expressly treats this as a cancellation/refund concession, not a free-change concession for US purchases. The US Customer Service Plan independently confirms the seven-day/24-hour cancellation protection.)
- Same-day change: 4.0/10 (Etihad's own current US Tiers and Benefits page lists Same-day flexibility among Platinum Custom Benefits, which eligible members must select before arriving at the airport. The separate existence and elite eligibility are confirmed, but the public conditions do not explicitly state whether all change fees and fare differences are waived.)

APPR covers applicable Canadian itineraries. Etihad also publishes India, Israel and other national rights notices, including Oman, the Philippines, Thailand, Saudi Arabia and Vietnam. Beyond statutory entitlements, its U.S. service plan says that for a missed connection within its control it will seek confirmed transport on Etihad or another airline and provide hotel accommodation, meals/refreshments and airport–hotel transport where schedules require. Its carriage conditions also allow rerouting on another selected airline following qualifying disruption. No general additional cash-compensation guarantee was verified.)

Value, Comfort and Deluxe include two 23 kg checked bags on U.S. routes.
