Axel's take: 8.8/10

Polished riverside luxury, with compact entry rooms and bridge construction next door. a historic 5-star boutique hotel on the river in Zurich’s Old Town, scored for what it is.

Storchen is a historic 5-star boutique hotel whose strongest selling points are its Old Town riverfront setting and genuinely attentive service. We’d choose it for a short Zurich stay built around walking, dining and sightseeing. Expedia and Trip.com guests repeatedly praise the staff, cleanliness and location; breakfast and the rooftop views also earn enthusiastic feedback. It feels like a strong luxury city base rather than somewhere you need to spend all day.

The main room trade-off is space: the hotel lists its entry double at just 18 square metres, and recent guests flag small bedrooms and bathrooms. More importantly, Rathausbrücke replacement works next door began in January 2026, with completion scheduled for 2029; the hotel warns of changes to Piazza dining. Ask about your room’s exposure before booking. We’d skip it if undisturbed surroundings or generous entry-level rooms are essential.

• Best for: couples on a luxury city break; Old Town sightseeing on foot; travelers who prioritize personal service

• Watch out for: Rathausbrücke construction next door through 2029; compact entry-level rooms and bathrooms; weather-dependent rooftop opening

• Location: Central Old Town position directly on the Limmat, convenient for sights and shopping.

• Rooms: Well-kept and comfortable by guest accounts; entry doubles are only 18 square metres.

• Cleanliness: A consistent strength across Booking.com ratings and recent Expedia guest feedback.

• Service: Warm, attentive staff attract repeated praise, though occasional concierge inconsistencies appear.

• Amenities: La Rôtisserie, bars, a weather-dependent rooftop and a fitness room; Piazza arrangements may change during bridge works.

• Fees and surprises: Breakfast may cost extra depending on the booking; valet parking, airport transfers and pets carry additional charges.
