Axel's take: 7.9/10

A clean, central Zurich base, with small rooms and summer heat to consider. a no-frills 2-star guesthouse in Zurich’s Old Town, scored for what it is.

Alexander Guesthouse is a no-frills 2-star in Zurich’s Old Town, and we’d pick it for a short stay spent exploring rather than lingering indoors. Booking.com and Expedia guests consistently praise the cleanliness, helpful staff and walkable location near the main station. Rooms are straightforward rather than stylish, but private bathrooms and free Wi-Fi cover the essentials. It’s a sensible option if location matters more than hotel facilities.

The main compromises are compact rooms and no air-conditioning: guests on both booking sites mention summer heat, with fans providing limited relief. Check-in takes place at sister Hotel Alexander, about 50 metres away at Niederdorfstrasse 40; breakfast is served there too and costs extra. Parking also carries a charge. We’d skip it if spacious rooms, reliable summer cooling or reception in the same building are priorities.

  • Best for: short sightseeing stays; solo travelers keeping costs down; travelers arriving by train

  • Watch out for: no air-conditioning; compact, simply furnished rooms; check-in and breakfast in another building

  • Location: Old Town restaurants and sights are close, with the main station a short walk away.

  • Rooms: Simple rooms with private bathrooms; the hotel lists twin rooms at 14 square metres.

  • Cleanliness: A consistent strength across Booking.com, Expedia and recent HolidayCheck feedback.

  • Service: Helpful, welcoming staff are repeatedly praised; reception is at nearby Hotel Alexander.

  • Amenities: Free Wi-Fi, TV and fans; optional buffet breakfast at the sister hotel.

  • Fees and surprises: Breakfast and parking cost extra; reserve parking ahead and go to Niederdorfstrasse 40 for check-in.
