Axel's take: 8.5/10

Grand railway-hotel character and warm service, with room choice and event noise worth watching. A historic 4-star railway hotel in downtown Winnipeg, scored for what it is.

The Fort Garry is a historic 4-star railway hotel whose character makes it a strong downtown pick. Expedia and Booking.com guests consistently praise cleanliness, helpful staff and comfortable beds, while Union Station and The Forks are an easy walk away. The Oval Room Brasserie and Ten Spa give it appeal beyond somewhere to sleep. We'd choose it for a Winnipeg weekend with a sense of occasion rather than uniform, modern luxury.

The trade-off is consistency: recent Tripadvisor guests describe some tired rooms and uneven bathrooms, alongside much happier reports. Wedding and ballroom noise is a recurring concern, so request a room away from event spaces. Parking costs extra, and the pool advertised on some listings actually belongs to a neighbouring athletic club with a separate admission charge. Light sleepers and families expecting an included hotel pool should look elsewhere.

  • Best for: Couples seeking historic character; Rail travelers using Union Station; Downtown sightseeing with spa time

  • Watch out for: Wedding and ballroom noise; Uneven room condition and bathroom layouts; Paid parking and separate-charge neighbouring pool

  • Location: Walkable to Union Station, The Forks and the Canadian Museum for Human Rights.

  • Rooms: Comfort scores are strong, but recent guests report uneven upkeep; confirm the room category.

  • Cleanliness: A clear strength overall, with high cleanliness ratings on Booking.com and Expedia.

  • Service: Friendly, helpful staff earn broad praise, despite occasional service lapses.

  • Amenities: Ten Spa, restaurants and a 24-hour gym; no hotel-owned pool.

  • Fees and surprises: Parking, spa treatments and neighbouring athletic-club pool access cost extra.
