#7 of 7 hotels in Historic Downtown & Riverwalk by Axel's take. Historic Downtown & Riverwalk is #1 of 6 places to stay in Wilmington. The best hotels in Historic Downtown & Riverwalk, ranked · Where to stay in Wilmington

Axel's take: 7.3/10

Choose it for the riverfront location, not consistently polished rooms. a full-service 4-star riverfront hotel in downtown Wilmington, scored for what it is.

Hotel Ballast is a full-service 4-star on Wilmington’s Riverwalk, and we’d choose it for downtown exploring rather than a luxury escape. River views and walkable access to restaurants are its strongest assets; Expedia and Tripadvisor guests also regularly praise the staff. The outdoor pool and waterfront patio add appeal when you want downtime without leaving downtown.

The catch is that the rooms don’t consistently match the setting. Recent reviews across both sites describe worn furnishings and dated bathrooms; Tripadvisor also has repeated maintenance and housekeeping complaints, although many Expedia guests report clean, comfortable stays. Parking and breakfast cost extra. It’s a good location-first choice for sightseeing or conferences, but we’d skip it if fresh interiors and reliably polished four-star standards matter most.

  • Best for: downtown sightseeing without much driving; river-view weekends; conference attendees

  • Watch out for: dated rooms and bathrooms; uneven maintenance and housekeeping; paid parking and breakfast

  • Location: Directly on the Cape Fear River, with downtown shops and restaurants within walking distance; not a beach hotel.

  • Rooms: River-view options are appealing, but recent guests repeatedly flag worn furnishings and aging bathrooms.

  • Cleanliness: Many guests report clean rooms, but recurring Tripadvisor complaints make consistency a concern.

  • Service: Friendly, helpful staff are a recurring strength across Expedia and Tripadvisor reviews.

  • Amenities: Outdoor pool, waterfront patio, restaurants, fitness center, free Wi-Fi and complimentary airport shuttle.

  • Fees and surprises: Self-parking, valet parking and breakfast carry additional charges; pets are not allowed.
