Stay around California Street, Huntington Park and Grace Cathedral for San Francisco’s grand, hilltop side. Cable cars run through the neighborhood, Chinatown lies downhill to the east, and Union Square is below to the south. It feels more residential than the shopping district, with architecture and views doing much of the work.
- Best for
- couplesluxury travelersa quiet stay
- Skip it if
- Steep walking is difficult; You want quick airport transfers
- Getting around
- All three cable-car lines cross Nob Hill, with the 1 California bus nearby; Chinatown and Union Square are downhill; from SFO use BART to Powell then an uphill walk or connection, and from OAK change at Coliseum first.
- After dark
- Residents describe the hilltop as sleepier than downtown or North Beach; cable-car frontage is the main caveat for noise-sensitive sleepers.
