Downtown & Temple Square
historic blocks · theaters and arenas · Main Street evenings · temple gardens
7.5/10
The clear first choice for seeing Salt Lake without constant driving.
Downtown wins on character, hotel quality and easy sightseeing, with the strongest walkable dining and evenings, but its higher typical rates weaken value.

Stay here for Salt Lake's easiest city break. Main Street, South Temple and the Gateway connect historic buildings, shopping, theaters and arena events. Locals answering visitors' lodging questions repeatedly recommend downtown because dinner and the game can be a walk rather than another drive.
Choose your block carefully: Temple Square is calmer than the entertainment streets farther south and west. Its grounds and new visitors' center are open, but the temple remains closed ahead of its April–October 2027 open house. For 2027 convention trips, recheck Salt Palace reconstruction and closure plans. Skip downtown only if quiet surroundings or daily drives elsewhere matter more than an easy urban stay.
- Best for
- first-time visitorstravelers without a carnightlifebusiness trips and conventions
- Skip it if
- You want reliably quiet evenings; Your trip revolves around driving outside the city
- Getting around
- Walk between downtown attractions; Blue and Green TRAX serve Main Street and South Temple, Red serves 400 South, and Green runs directly from SLC.
- After dark
- Main Street and the Gateway offer evening venues; expect a calmer atmosphere around Temple Square and crowds near the arena on event nights.
