Palafox is our default for a first visit that mixes sightseeing with good evenings out. Its historic commercial blocks lead toward the bay, with museums, theaters and restaurants woven into a genuinely walkable downtown. Stay near Palafox and Government Street if walking home after dinner matters more than waking beside the Gulf.

- Usually the liveliest mainland choice; visitors describe busy Palafox blocks and sometimes rowdy late-weekend bar crowds.
