Baixa & Chiado
pedestrian shopping streets · historic cafés · theaters and bookshops · visitor-heavy
8.6/10
Walk between central sights, use Blue or Green Metro, and take Sintra trains from Rossio; choose Baixa for easier gradients.

Stay here when you want Lisbon to make sense immediately. Baixa gives you the pedestrian grid around Rua Augusta, Rossio and the waterfront; Chiado adds bookshops, theaters and cafés uphill around Rua Garrett. Together they make a particularly straightforward base for sightseeing without organizing every outing around transport.
- Best for
- first-time visitorstravelers without a carshopping
- Skip it if
- You want a residential atmosphere; You need reliably quiet streets
- Getting around
- Blue/Green Metro at Baixa-Chiado and Sintra trains at Rossio; downtown is walkable; from LIS take Red to Alameda, then Green.
- After dark
- Restaurant streets remain active; noise varies considerably near the Bairro Alto and Cais do Sodré approaches.
