Stay here for cobbled lanes, viewpoints and evenings built around fado rather than a bar crawl. Alfama tumbles below the castle toward the river; Graça sits higher, with neighborhood cafés and expansive views. The appeal is the setting itself: getting pleasantly sidetracked between stairways, churches and little squares is part of the day.

- Getting around
- 28E serves the hills; Santa Apolónia Blue Metro serves lower Alfama, not upper Graça; from LIS change Red to Blue at São Sebastião, then expect a climb.
- After dark
- Fado dinners animate parts of Alfama, but this is a different proposition from Bairro Alto's late-night bar streets.
- Where to look
- Largo das Portas do Sol. Start around the viewpoint for old-town lanes, outdoor cafés and river outlooks; this suits walkers comfortable with climbs.Santa Apolónia station. Choose the railway edge when arrival logistics matter more than sleeping higher in Alfama's winding lanes.Rua Senhora da Glória. Look higher in Graça for neighborhood life and viewpoint outings, accepting that downtown returns involve a climb.
