Where to stay in Baltimore for families: Inner Harbor

Updated October 15, 2026 · Ranked by Axel from research, its own hotel reviews and recent rates · How we rank

Inner Harbor leads for families because the Aquarium, Science Center and waterfront promenade let you build a short trip around walking. Harbor East & Little Italy comes next, offering stronger hotel scores and restaurant streets while keeping harbor attractions accessible; choose it when the evening setting matters alongside daytime sightseeing.

Harbor East's Aliceanna Street and waterfront bring together smart shops, destination restaurants and an orderly, modern streetscape. Walk north into Little Italy around High and Albemarle streets for smaller blocks, longstanding Italian restaurants and a more residential feel. The useful combination is waterfront convenience without sleeping directly above Fell's Point's busiest bars.

Stay around Pratt, Howard and Eutaw streets when the Convention Center, Camden Yards or an arena event is the reason for your trip. The advantage is an uncomplicated walk back afterward, plus Light Rail access. The Inner Harbor is east, while the Hippodrome and Lexington Market give you reasons to explore north.

Around Charles Street and Mount Vernon Place, Baltimore trades waterfront development for grand townhouses, the Washington Monument, the Walters Art Museum and the Peabody Library. Museums, performance venues and neighborhood restaurants make this a satisfying place to return to, not simply somewhere to sleep. It is our strongest choice for architecture and culture.

Fell's Point delivers the Baltimore many visitors hope to find: Belgian-block streets, old waterfront buildings, independent restaurants and pubs around Thames Street and Broadway. Farther east, Canton shifts toward rowhouse living, waterfront park space and the restaurants around O'Donnell Square. They share a waterfront outlook, but Canton means longer trips to downtown sightseeing.

No rail; Navy buses run on Eastern Avenue, with the Orange Circulator near Caroline and Bank streets in Fell's Point; Canton adds longer journeys; BWI usually means rideshare or rail plus bus.
    After dark
Thames Street and Broadway can be loud late; Canton's side streets are more residential, though O'Donnell Square remains a pub-going destination.

West Nursery Road and Elkridge Landing Road form an airport hotel-and-office district in Linthicum, not a Baltimore neighborhood break. The payoff is practical: an easier early departure, somewhere to sleep after a late arrival, or a base for meetings around the airport. Expect meals on site and airport shuttles rather than an evening exploring local streets.

    Best for
travelers on a budgeta quiet stay
    Skip it if
This is your first Baltimore sightseeing trip; You want restaurants and attractions outside your door
    Getting around
Confirm the property's BWI shuttle; terminal Light Rail reaches downtown, while MARC and Amtrak use a separate rail station; do not assume either is a short walk from your lodging.
    After dark
Evenings revolve around on-site dining and shuttle pickups rather than street nightlife; quiet from bars does not guarantee silence beside an airport.
