Axel's take: 8.5/10

A strong downtown luxury pick for comfortable rooms and location, not extensive facilities. a traditional five-star downtown hotel near the White House, scored for what it is.

This traditional five-star hotel near Lafayette Square is a strong pick for travelers who want comfortable rooms and a central sightseeing base. Recent Tripadvisor and Expedia guests repeatedly praise the beds, cleanliness and helpful staff; Booking.com’s ratings also put location and comfort among its strongest points. We’d choose it for a Washington weekend or business trip where being well placed matters more than spending the day at the hotel.

The trade-off is a relatively limited set of facilities for a luxury address: there’s a gym and French brasserie, but no pool, and room service has limited hours. The nightly Urban Experience Fee and separately charged valet parking also deserve attention. Service feedback is predominantly positive, though occasional missed requests suggest it isn’t uniformly seamless. Skip it if you want resort-style facilities or dislike mandatory extras.

• Best for: couples on sightseeing weekends; downtown business travelers; travelers prioritizing comfortable beds

• Watch out for: nightly Urban Experience Fee; separately charged valet parking; no pool; limited room-service hours

• Location: A standout strength: near the White House, restaurants and downtown sights.

• Rooms: Comfortable beds and generous space draw consistent praise.

• Cleanliness: Strong overall feedback, including repeated praise in recent Expedia reviews.

• Service: Usually friendly and helpful, with occasional missed requests or uneven follow-through.

• Amenities: French brasserie, bar and fitness center; no pool and limited-hour room service.

• Fees and surprises: A nightly Urban Experience Fee applies; valet parking and breakfast can add to the bill.
