Axel's take: 8.7/10

Stylish waterfront luxury with excellent rooms, though service isn't always five-star consistent. a modern five-star waterfront hotel on The Wharf, scored for what it is.

Pendry is a modern five-star waterfront hotel on The Wharf, and it's a strong pick for travelers who want restaurants and evening drinks close at hand. Tripadvisor and Expedia guests consistently praise the cleanliness, comfortable beds and well-kept interiors. The heated terrace pool, spa and Moonraker rooftop bar give it more appeal for a leisurely weekend than a straightforward sightseeing base.

The main reservation is consistency: alongside abundant praise for thoughtful staff, some recent guests describe uneven front-desk or dining service. That's noticeable at this level, even if it isn't the dominant experience. Check your room category carefully rather than assuming generous space or a full river view, and factor in the nightly destination fee and paid valet parking. We'd choose it for a waterfront getaway; we'd look closer to the Mall for a museum-heavy trip.

• Best for: couples on a waterfront weekend; travelers who prioritize dining and rooftop drinks; luxury stays with pool and spa time

• Watch out for: nightly destination fee and paid valet parking; occasional service inconsistencies; room sizes and river views vary by category

• Location: Waterfront restaurants on the doorstep; the hotel places the National Mall about a mile away.

• Rooms: Comfortable beds and polished interiors; choose the size and view category carefully.

• Cleanliness: A clear strength, with consistently high cleanliness ratings across Tripadvisor and Expedia.

• Service: Usually warm and attentive, but some recent guests report front-desk and dining lapses.

• Amenities: Heated outdoor terrace pool, spa, 24-hour gym, rooftop bar and round-the-clock room service.

• Fees and surprises: Nightly destination fee; valet parking, pet stays and pool cabanas carry additional charges.
