Axel's take: 8.7/10

A strong Dupont Circle pick for roomy comfort and welcoming service, with extras to budget for. An upscale 4-star boutique hotel near Dupont Circle, scored for what it is.

Hotel Madera is an upscale 4-star boutique near Dupont Circle, and we'd pick it for comfortable rooms and a neighborhood base rather than grand-hotel facilities. Tripadvisor and Booking.com guests repeatedly praise spacious, clean rooms, comfortable beds and helpful staff; recent Expedia feedback broadly agrees. Restaurants and the Metro are within easy walking distance, while selected rooms add private balconies. Firefly, the on-site restaurant and bar, makes staying in convenient.

The main catch is the nightly amenity fee, with valet parking charged separately and breakfast generally extra. There is a 24-hour gym but no pool. Some guests report noise from neighboring rooms or elevators, though many describe quiet stays; light sleepers should request a room away from the lifts. We'd skip it if extensive facilities or an extras-free bill matter most.

• Best for: Couples exploring DC without a car; Business travelers wanting room to spread out; Travelers seeking a balcony room

• Watch out for: Nightly amenity fee and separate valet charges; Some reports of room-to-room and elevator noise; No swimming pool

• Location: Walkable Dupont Circle base near restaurants and Metro; not directly beside the National Mall.

• Rooms: Spaciousness and comfortable beds draw consistent praise; balconies are available in selected categories.

• Cleanliness: A clear strength across Booking.com, Tripadvisor and recent Expedia feedback.

• Service: Helpful, welcoming staff are a recurring highlight, with occasional less-positive check-in reports.

• Amenities: Firefly restaurant and bar, a 24-hour fitness center and filtered-water stations; no pool.

• Fees and surprises: Nightly amenity fee includes Wi-Fi; valet parking and most breakfast arrangements cost extra.
