Axel's take: 7.0/10

Friendly staff help, but renovation and maintenance problems make this a conditional pick. a practical 3-star hotel in suburban Alexandria, now independently operated as Hotel Pentagon South, scored for what it is.

The former Courtyard Alexandria Pentagon South now operates independently as Hotel Pentagon South, a practical 3-star base better suited to driving than sightseeing on foot. We'd consider it for a straightforward work trip: Expedia and Agoda guests repeatedly praise the welcoming staff, and clean rooms and comfortable beds remain common positives. Included breakfast and free Wi-Fi help its value, though the building is showing its age.

The catch is reliability. Guests report renovation work through October 2026, with repeated complaints about worn bathrooms, inconsistent hot water or air-conditioning, and guest-elevator outages earlier in 2026. The pool has also been reported unavailable, despite older descriptions advertising it. Parking costs extra, and shuttle service should be confirmed rather than assumed. We'd skip it for a polished leisure stay or if dependable elevator access is essential.

• Best for: work trips with a car; value-minded short stays

• Watch out for: ongoing renovation and uneven maintenance; reported elevator outages and unavailable pool; paid parking; confirm shuttle service

• Location: Suburban Alexandria base; plan on driving or arranging transport to Old Town and Washington.

• Rooms: Comfortable beds earn praise, but dated fittings and plumbing or climate-control faults recur.

• Cleanliness: Generally a strength in guest feedback, although upkeep is less consistent.

• Service: Friendly, accommodating staff are the clearest positive across review sites.

• Amenities: Breakfast, Wi-Fi and a gym are listed; do not count on the advertised pool being available.

• Fees and surprises: Garage parking is extra; confirm renovation disruption, elevator operation and shuttle availability before booking.
