Axel's take: 9.3/10

Old-world Vienna with service that largely lives up to the Sacher name. a historic five-star luxury hotel opposite Vienna’s State Opera, scored for what it is.

Hotel Sacher Wien is a historic five-star luxury hotel opposite the State Opera, and a strong pick for travelers who want distinctly Viennese grandeur rather than contemporary minimalism. Booking.com and Expedia guests consistently praise the spotless rooms, comfortable beds and genuinely attentive staff, with concierge help and thoughtful birthday touches standing out. The central location makes opera evenings and museum visits unusually easy.

The trade-offs are mostly about fit: several recent Booking.com guests found Deluxe rooms smaller than expected, and the ornate interiors won’t suit everyone. The hotel confirms there’s no swimming pool, although it has a boutique spa, sauna and gym. Breakfast and parking can cost extra. We’d choose it for a celebratory city break, but skip it if generous entry-level space or a pool is essential.

• Best for: opera and museum lovers; special-occasion couples; fans of traditional grand hotels

• Watch out for: some Deluxe rooms feel compact; no swimming pool; breakfast and parking may cost extra

• Location: Opposite the State Opera, beside the Albertina and close to central sights and transit.

• Rooms: Individually decorated traditional interiors and marble bathrooms; several guests find Deluxe rooms compact.

• Cleanliness: An especially strong point across Booking.com, Expedia and Tripadvisor guest feedback.

• Service: Repeated praise for welcoming staff, helpful concierges and personal celebration touches.

• Amenities: Restaurants, cafés, bars, boutique spa, sauna, steam bath and a 24-hour gym; no pool.

• Fees and surprises: Check breakfast inclusion; parking, pets and extra beds carry additional charges.
