#9 of 9 hotels in San Polo & Santa Croce by Axel's take. San Polo & Santa Croce is #2 of 8 places to stay in Venice. The best hotels in San Polo & Santa Croce, ranked · Where to stay in Venice

Axel's take: 8.1/10

A practical Venice base with old-fashioned rooms and excellent transport access. a traditional 3-star near Venice Santa Lucia station, scored for what it is.

Carlton Capri is a traditional 3-star tucked behind the Grand Canal, roughly five minutes from Santa Lucia station. It's a strong pick for travelers who want a convenient, quieter base rather than a waterfront showpiece. Recent Expedia guests repeatedly praise clean rooms, helpful staff and the breakfast buffet; Tripadvisor feedback also supports the tucked-away location. We'd choose it for a short sightseeing stay, especially when arriving by train.

The trade-offs are older furnishings, some small bathrooms and service that isn't uniformly warm. Shower leaks appear in recent reviews on both Expedia and Tripadvisor, so bathroom upkeep deserves attention. Breakfast inclusion depends on your booking, and the hotel's own website confirms there is no on-site restaurant. We'd skip it if contemporary rooms, polished service or a Grand Canal outlook are priorities.

  • Best for: short sightseeing stays; travelers arriving by train; couples happy with traditional decor

  • Watch out for: dated furnishings and some small bathrooms; recent reports of leaking showers; bridge steps when arriving with luggage

  • Location: Tucked away near Santa Lucia and Piazzale Roma; the station approach involves crossing a bridge.

  • Rooms: Traditional Venetian styling; guests report comfortable rooms, but sizes and bathroom condition vary.

  • Cleanliness: Generally a strength in recent Expedia feedback, despite occasional sharply negative reports.

  • Service: Mostly praised as helpful, with recurring exceptions involving brusque reception staff.

  • Amenities: Free Wi-Fi, air conditioning and buffet breakfast; dining is at the sister hotel, not on site.

  • Fees and surprises: Check whether breakfast is included; small pets and laundry carry extra charges, and city tax is payable.
