#5 of 9 hotels in Cannaregio by Axel's take. Cannaregio is #3 of 8 places to stay in Venice. The best hotels in Cannaregio, ranked · Where to stay in Venice

Axel's take: 8.8/10

A characterful, welcoming base that makes arriving in Venice unusually easy. A historic 3-star in a former monastery near Santa Lucia station, scored for what it is.

Abbazia is a historic 3-star in a former Carmelite monastery, a few minutes from Santa Lucia station. It’s a strong pick for travelers who want Venetian character without a complicated arrival with luggage. Tripadvisor, Booking.com and Expedia guests consistently praise the helpful staff, cleanliness and generous breakfast; the courtyard garden and former refectory lounge give this practical base real personality.

The trade-off is that historic charm doesn’t mean uniformly modern rooms. Recent Expedia guests describe some compact rooms and showers, alongside larger, updated accommodation, and occasional visible wear. Check the room category rather than assuming every photograph represents your booking. St. Mark’s is a substantial walk or vaporetto ride away, so we’d skip it if doorstep access to the main sights matters more than station convenience.

  • Best for: Travelers arriving by train; Couples who like historic character; Families wanting easy luggage logistics

  • Watch out for: Room sizes and finishes vary; Some compact showers; Not beside St. Mark’s Square

  • Location: Near Santa Lucia and Ferrovia water buses; convenient for arrivals, farther from St. Mark’s.

  • Rooms: Traditional accommodation with some updated bathrooms; recent guests report varying room and shower sizes.

  • Cleanliness: A consistent strength across guest feedback, including Booking.com’s strong cleanliness rating.

  • Service: Friendly, helpful reception staff are the most consistent highlight across sources.

  • Amenities: Included buffet breakfast, courtyard garden, lounge bar, Wi-Fi and luggage storage.

  • Fees and surprises: City accommodation tax is collected at the property; no on-site parking.
