Axel's take: 8.7/10

A strong downtown pick for historic character, comfortable beds and attentive service. a restored, independent 3-star boutique hotel in downtown Vancouver, scored for what it is.

The Victorian is a restored 3-star boutique hotel that delivers more character than a standard downtown chain. Its heritage brickwork and high ceilings sit alongside modern furnishings and private bathrooms. Recent Tripadvisor and Expedia guests repeatedly praise the comfortable beds, excellent cleanliness and helpful staff. We'd pick it for exploring Gastown, attending a concert or spending a few nights before a cruise.

The main compromise is outside: several guests describe surrounding streets as uncomfortable at times, and street or evening noise can intrude, although others report quiet stays. Room sizes vary, breakfast isn't offered, and the limited parking costs extra. It's a very good fit if character and walkability matter more than extensive facilities; we'd skip it if you're particularly noise-sensitive or want a consistently polished neighborhood.

• Best for: couples exploring downtown; concert and theater visitors; pre-cruise stays

• Watch out for: occasional street and evening noise; surrounding streets can feel uncomfortable; no breakfast; limited paid parking

• Location: Walkable to Gastown, theaters, arenas and SkyTrain; some guests dislike the immediate surroundings.

• Rooms: Restored heritage interiors, private bathrooms and much-praised beds; check the room category for size.

• Cleanliness: A consistent strength across Tripadvisor, Booking.com and Expedia feedback.

• Service: Friendly, helpful reception staff earn repeated praise across sites.

• Amenities: Free Wi-Fi, in-room coffee, an elevator and Locanda dell'Orso restaurant; no hotel breakfast.

• Fees and surprises: Parking is paid and limited; cribs, extra beds and early or late check-out can incur charges.
