Axel's take: 8.6/10

A strong downtown base, with welcoming staff and a few dated edges. A full-service 4-star downtown hotel with updated rooms and some older fittings, scored for what it is.

The Metropolitan is a full-service 4-star in downtown Vancouver, and a strong pick for travelers who prioritize comfort and convenience over cutting-edge design. Recent Expedia and Tripadvisor guests repeatedly praise helpful staff, clean rooms and comfortable beds; Booking.com’s ratings reinforce those strengths. Shopping and the airport SkyTrain are close, while Canada Place is walkable. The indoor heated pool and Diva restaurant round out a practical city stay.

The updates haven’t erased every older feature: some guests still find the bathrooms and fittings dated. Several Tripadvisor reviews flag slow breakfast service, and parking costs extra. Most balconies are Juliet-style rather than places to sit outside, so check the room description carefully. We’d choose it for a car-free sightseeing or business trip, but skip it if modern design or sweeping views are priorities.

• Best for: Car-free city breaks; Downtown business travelers; Pre-cruise stays

• Watch out for: Some dated bathrooms and fittings; Breakfast service can be slow; Parking costs extra

• Location: Central downtown base near shopping and SkyTrain; walkable to Canada Place.

• Rooms: Comfortable beds and updated furnishings, though some older fittings remain; balcony types vary.

• Cleanliness: Consistently strong guest feedback across Booking.com, Expedia and Tripadvisor.

• Service: Friendly, helpful staff are a recurring strength; breakfast can be less efficient.

• Amenities: Indoor heated pool, 24-hour gym, sauna, steam room and Diva restaurant.

• Fees and surprises: Self-parking, valet and pets carry charges; breakfast is not included with every booking.
