Axel's take: 7.9/10

Good-value basics and friendly staff, with motel-style rooms and some uneven upkeep. A budget, motel-style hotel in South Tampa, scored for what it is.

Hotel South Tampa & Suites is a budget, motel-style property, not the boutique hotel its website suggests. We'd pick it for a practical overnight or short stay with a car. Recent Expedia guests repeatedly praise clean rooms, helpful staff and good value; Trip.com feedback is more mixed but also includes satisfied budget travelers. Free overnight parking, included breakfast and a heated outdoor pool give it useful extras, while kitchenette suites suit longer visits.

The trade-offs are older furnishings, variable housekeeping and a main-road setting rather than a walkable downtown location. Some guests report worn fixtures or disappointing room cleaning, although those complaints don't dominate the broader ratings. Breakfast is functional rather than elaborate. We'd skip it for a polished boutique experience or a car-free sightseeing trip.

• Best for: Budget travelers with a car; Pre-cruise overnight stays; Longer stays in kitchenette suites

• Watch out for: Older motel-style rooms; Uneven housekeeping and upkeep; Main-road setting; car recommended

• Location: South Dale Mabry Highway: practical for driving around Tampa, less suited to car-free sightseeing.

• Rooms: Simple rooms and kitchenette suites; comfort earns praise, but some furnishings and fixtures show wear.

• Cleanliness: Mostly positive recent Expedia feedback, with cleaning lapses reported on Trip.com and Tripadvisor.

• Service: Friendly, accommodating staff are a recurring strength, especially in recent Expedia reviews.

• Amenities: Included breakfast, heated outdoor pool, fitness room, free Wi-Fi and guest laundry.

• Fees and surprises: Overnight parking is free; extended parking costs extra. The official site requires credit-card payment and does not accept cash.
