Go for the harbour views and pools, but expect occasional service stumbles. a design-led 5-star hotel on Darling Harbour, scored for what it is.

W Sydney is a design-led 5-star on Darling Harbour, and we'd pick it for a lively luxury break rather than a discreet retreat. Its bold rooms, waterfront setting and heated infinity pool are the draws, backed by an indoor pool, spa and proper gym. Recent Expedia guests repeatedly praise comfortable rooms, cleanliness and helpful staff; Booking.com's strong overall ratings support that positive picture.

The caveat is consistency at luxury expectations. Tripadvisor guests describe recurring check-in and housekeeping lapses, alongside plenty of excellent stays. Some rooms catch traffic noise from the neighbouring road, while dark interiors and fiddly lighting controls won't suit everyone. We'd book a harbour-view room and leave the car behind: valet spaces are limited and require advance booking. Skip it if quiet surroundings and reliably seamless service matter more than design and facilities.

• Best for: couples wanting a lively luxury break; Darling Harbour sightseeing; pool and spa enthusiasts

• Watch out for: uneven check-in and housekeeping; traffic noise in some rooms; dark interiors and fiddly room controls

• Location: Excellent for Darling Harbour dining and attractions; less convenient for a Circular Quay-focused stay.

• Rooms: Bold, comfortable rooms; harbour views are worth prioritising, but some guests report traffic noise.

• Cleanliness: Strong scores on Booking.com and Expedia, tempered by repeated Tripadvisor housekeeping lapses.

• Service: Many guests praise helpful staff, but check-in delays and inconsistent follow-through recur.

• Amenities: Heated outdoor infinity pool, indoor pool, spa, 24-hour gym, restaurants and bars.

• Fees and surprises: Paid valet is limited and must be pre-booked; pets require the PAWS package or direct confirmation.
