Axel's take: 8.3/10

Generous apartment space and entertainment convenience, with a few rough edges for five-star expectations. 5-star serviced apartments in Pyrmont’s casino and entertainment complex, scored for what it is.

The Star Grand Residences offers five-star serviced apartments within Pyrmont’s casino complex, rather than a conventional luxury hotel. It’s a strong pick for families or friends wanting separate bedrooms, living space and balconies, with restaurants and the Sydney Lyric Theatre close at hand. Recent Hotels.com guests repeatedly praise spacious accommodation, comfortable beds and cleanliness; Tripadvisor guests are especially enthusiastic about the concierge team. The heated pool and gym add useful substance to the stay.

The trade-off is consistency rather than a lack of facilities. Some recent Tripadvisor guests describe worn apartment furnishings and slow responses to requests, despite the broadly positive ratings across major sites. Parking can cost extra, and a harbour view depends on the category booked. We’d choose it for space and convenience, but skip it for intimate surroundings or reliably polished luxury service.

• Best for: Families wanting separate bedrooms; Friends sharing an apartment; Sydney Lyric Theatre visitors

• Watch out for: Some reports of worn furnishings; Occasional slow responses to requests; Parking not always included

• Location: Handy for Darling Harbour and the Sydney Lyric Theatre, with light rail nearby.

• Rooms: One-, two- and three-bedroom apartments with living areas and balconies; views vary by category.

• Cleanliness: Strong overall ratings, though occasional apartment and shared-facility cleaning complaints appear.

• Service: Concierge earns repeated praise; some recent guests report delays with requests and maintenance.

• Amenities: Heated pool, gym and extensive dining within the casino complex; spa treatments are also available.

• Fees and surprises: Check parking and breakfast inclusions; credit-card payments attract a service fee.
