Axel's take: 7.8/10

A well-located city classic, but not consistently polished enough for five-star expectations. a refurbished heritage 5-star in Sydney’s CBD, scored for what it is.

Sofitel Sydney Wentworth is a heritage five-star city hotel whose 2024 refurbishment makes it a good choice for a short Sydney break. Its strongest asset is location: Martin Place Metro, Circular Quay and the Botanic Gardens are within easy reach. Expedia and Accor guests repeatedly praise clean rooms, comfortable beds and helpful staff, while the restaurants and breakfast give you good reasons to eat in.

The refresh hasn’t erased the building’s limitations. Rooms can be compact with limited storage, and guests still flag older bathrooms. Tripadvisor and Accor reviews also describe breakfast queues and uneven service—shortcomings that matter at this level. There’s no swimming pool. Street-construction noise was reported in May 2026; check whether it still affects your room. We’d choose it for convenience and dining, but skip it if spacious rooms and seamless luxury service are priorities.

• Best for: couples on short city breaks; business travelers using the CBD; sightseers who prefer walking and transit

• Watch out for: compact rooms and variable bathroom layouts; breakfast queues and uneven service; no swimming pool

• Location: Excellent CBD base near Martin Place Metro, with Circular Quay and the Botanic Gardens walkable.

• Rooms: Comfortable refreshed interiors, but room sizes, storage and bathroom condition vary.

• Cleanliness: A consistent strength in Expedia reviews, with occasional housekeeping lapses reported on Accor.

• Service: Many helpful-staff reports, balanced by recurring complaints about check-in and slow follow-through.

• Amenities: Two restaurants, two bars and a 24-hour gym with reformer Pilates; no swimming pool.

• Fees and surprises: Parking and recovery facilities cost extra; an incidental deposit applies. Confirm nearby construction status.
