Axel's take: 8.5/10

A dependable city base with welcoming staff, comfortable rooms and a few dated edges. an upscale 4.5-star city hotel near Darling Harbour, scored for what it is.

PARKROYAL Darling Harbour is an upscale 4.5-star city hotel that gets the important things right: comfortable beds, generally clean rooms and a location handy for Darling Harbour, Chinatown and Town Hall station. We'd pick it for an easy sightseeing or conference stay rather than a splashy waterfront escape. Recent Expedia and Trip.com guests repeatedly praise the welcoming staff, while breakfast earns plenty of enthusiastic mentions.

The trade-offs are fairly ordinary but worth knowing. Some guests find the rooms and bathrooms dated, and Tripadvisor reviews flag sound carrying between connecting rooms. Despite the name, you're a short walk from the waterfront, not directly on it, and a harbour view isn't guaranteed. There's a gym but no swimming pool; parking costs extra. We'd skip it if contemporary design, pool time or dependable quiet tops your list.

• Best for: sightseers exploring on foot; ICC conference visitors; families wanting twin queen beds

• Watch out for: sound transfer in connecting rooms; some dated rooms and bathrooms; no swimming pool

• Location: Convenient for Darling Harbour, Chinatown and Town Hall; not directly on the waterfront.

• Rooms: Comfortable beds and generally good space; decor and sound insulation attract some criticism.

• Cleanliness: Strong overall feedback across booking sites, despite occasional housekeeping lapses.

• Service: Friendly, helpful staff are one of the most consistent positives in recent reviews.

• Amenities: Gym, restaurants, bar and paid-access Club Lounge; breakfast is well liked, but there's no pool.

• Fees and surprises: Parking and breakfast may cost extra; an incidental deposit is required, and views depend on room category.
