Axel's take: 8.8/10

A strong Sydney luxury base, especially with the right harbour-view room. a renovated 5-star city hotel beside Circular Quay, scored for what it is.

InterContinental Sydney is a large 5-star hotel combining the historic Treasury Building with modern tower rooms, and it’s a strong pick for sightseeing in comfort. Circular Quay, the Opera House and Royal Botanic Garden are close by. IHG completed a major renovation in 2022, and recent Expedia and Tripadvisor guests keep praising the comfortable rooms, cleanliness, breakfast and helpful staff. The indoor pool’s harbour outlook adds something genuinely special to an otherwise big-city hotel.

Choose your room carefully: city, eastern harbour, Harbour Bridge and Opera House views are different categories, not interchangeable promises. Club lounge access is also a separate inclusion, and valet parking costs extra. Some guests mention service inconsistencies, while families can find shared rooms short on storage. We’d choose it for location and comfort, but skip it if you want intimate, small-hotel luxury.

• Best for: first-time Sydney visitors; couples booking harbour views; business travelers wanting sightseeing nearby

• Watch out for: view categories differ substantially; club access and valet parking cost extra; shared family rooms can lack storage

• Location: Excellent access to Circular Quay transport, the Opera House and Royal Botanic Garden.

• Rooms: Renovated, comfortable tower rooms; book the precise outlook and bed configuration you want.

• Cleanliness: A clear strength across Booking.com ratings and recent Expedia guest feedback.

• Service: Mostly warm and helpful, with occasional inconsistencies rather than a dominant negative pattern.

• Amenities: Heated indoor pool on level 31, gym, rooftop Aster bar and an optional club lounge.

• Fees and surprises: Valet parking is charged; check whether breakfast and club access are included.
