Capella Sydney is a heritage five-star luxury hotel in the former Department of Education building, and a strong pick if personal service matters more than harbour views. Recent Tripadvisor and Expedia guests repeatedly praise the warm staff, spacious rooms and meticulous housekeeping. The restored sandstone setting has real character, while the indoor pool, Auriga Spa and residents-only Living Room give you reasons to linger beyond sightseeing.

The main compromise is the outlook: entry-level Deluxe rooms face the atrium, and this isn't the place for sweeping waterfront views.
