Hotel Rival is an independent 4-star boutique hotel overlooking Mariatorget, and a strong pick for a Stockholm city break. Recent Tripadvisor and Expedia guests repeatedly praise genuinely helpful staff, spotless rooms and comfortable beds. The included breakfast combines a buffet with cooked-to-order dishes, while Södermalm’s restaurants and nearby metro make the location practical as well as appealing. It delivers unusually well on the things that matter at this level.

Room choice is the catch. Standard rooms can feel compact, and the hotel’s own room chart says Standard and Economy rooms lack air-conditioning; only some Superior rooms have it. Book accordingly for summer. The theatre and busy bars also make this a social hotel rather than a hushed retreat. We’d skip it if guaranteed cooling in the entry-level rooms or spacious, uniformly contemporary interiors are priorities.
