Axel's take: 7.6/10

A practical Myeongdong base if location matters more than room space. a budget guesthouse with private rooms in central Myeongdong, scored for what it is.

Philstay Myeongdong Metro is a budget guesthouse, not a full-service hotel, and we'd pick it for sightseeing rather than spending time indoors. Its strongest asset is the location: Myeongdong's shops and restaurants surround it, with subway stations a short walk away. Booking.com and Expedia guests frequently praise the convenience, cleanliness and helpful host. Private bathrooms and a shared kitchen make it a useful, no-frills base.

The compromises are substantial but predictable: very small rooms, notably firm beds and compact wet-room bathrooms where showering wets the toilet area. Some rooms lack outside windows, so check the exact category before booking. Service availability and housekeeping receive less consistent feedback than the location. We'd skip it for a spacious family stay, soft mattresses or dependable full-service attention.

• Best for: solo travelers packing light; budget-minded shoppers; sightseers out all day

• Watch out for: tiny rooms, some without outside windows; firm beds and wet-room bathrooms; inconsistent staff availability

• Location: Central shopping-district setting, a short walk from Myeongdong and Euljiro 1-ga stations.

• Rooms: Basic private rooms with air conditioning and refrigerators; space and mattress firmness are recurring drawbacks.

• Cleanliness: Generally positive recent feedback, though housekeeping consistency attracts some complaints.

• Service: Many guests praise the helpful host; others report difficulty finding staff when needed.

• Amenities: Free Wi-Fi, shared kitchen, luggage storage and a rooftop terrace; expect guesthouse-level facilities.

• Fees and surprises: Confirm arrival arrangements directly: booking sites give different check-in cutoffs, and Expedia excludes after-hours arrivals.
