Axel's take: 8.3/10

A strong family resort with refreshed rooms, excellent pools and some uneven service. a renovated upscale golf-and-pool resort in Gainey Ranch, scored for what it is.

Grand Hyatt Scottsdale is a large, upscale resort that makes most sense when the resort itself is the vacation. Its transformation from the former Hyatt Regency brings refreshed rooms and public spaces, while the sandy-entry pool, three-story waterslide and separate adults-only pool give families and couples room to spread out. Tripadvisor and Expedia guests repeatedly praise cleanliness, comfortable rooms and welcoming staff. We'd pick it for a pool-focused family break, with golf and Spa Avania adding appeal beyond the waterslide.

The polish isn't completely consistent. Recent Tripadvisor reviews describe breakfast bottlenecks, uneven food service and billing mistakes, despite the broader praise for staff. A nightly resort fee and separate parking charges also weaken the value if you're mostly out sightseeing. We'd skip it for a walkable Old Town stay or an intimate luxury retreat.

• Best for: families planning pool days; golf-and-spa breaks; couples who enjoy a large resort

• Watch out for: resort fee plus paid parking; breakfast and service bottlenecks; driving needed for Old Town

• Location: Landscaped Gainey Ranch setting; better for a resort stay than exploring Old Town on foot.

• Rooms: Renovated rooms earn praise for comfort; many have balconies or patios.

• Cleanliness: A consistent strength across Tripadvisor and Expedia, despite occasional housekeeping misses.

• Service: Usually warm and helpful, but recent reports flag dining delays and billing errors.

• Amenities: Extensive family pools, adults-only pool, waterslide, Spa Avania, golf access and racket sports.

• Fees and surprises: Nightly resort fee, separate self-parking or valet charges, and additional pet fees.
