#2 of 7 hotels in Upper State Street by Axel's take. Upper State Street is #4 of 6 places to stay in Santa Barbara. The best hotels in Upper State Street, ranked · Where to stay in Santa Barbara

Axel's take: 8.2/10

A refreshed budget base, strongest on clean rooms and friendly service. a renovated, family-run roadside motel on Upper State Street, scored for what it is.

Sunset Motel now operates as Solei House: a family-run roadside motel, not a full-service boutique hotel. The owners say they returned in 2025 to renovate it, and recent Expedia and Booking.com guests praise clean rooms, comfortable beds and welcoming service. We'd pick it for a straightforward Santa Barbara stay with useful in-room basics rather than resort extras.

Upper State Street puts restaurants and groceries within walking distance, but downtown and the beach are a drive or bus ride away. Recent Hotels.com guests flag traffic noise and limited parking, although many still report sleeping comfortably and parking easily. There's no pool or included breakfast. It's a strong pick for budget-minded travelers with a car; we'd skip it for a beach-centered walking holiday or if road noise easily spoils your sleep.

  • Best for: budget-minded couples; road-trip stopovers; families wanting simple room amenities

  • Watch out for: traffic noise on State Street; limited parking spaces; not a walk-to-the-beach location

  • Location: Walkable dining and groceries on Upper State Street; the hotel puts downtown and Arroyo Burro Beach about a 10-minute drive away.

  • Rooms: Renovated rooms include a mini-fridge, microwave and coffeemaker; family suites and an accessible king room are available.

  • Cleanliness: A consistent strength in recent Expedia, Hotels.com and Booking.com guest feedback.

  • Service: Recent guests repeatedly praise friendly, helpful staff; the official site advertises a 24-hour front desk.

  • Amenities: Free Wi-Fi and practical room basics, but no pool, gym or included breakfast.

  • Fees and surprises: Parking is free but spaces are limited; no elevator. The supplied website disclaims hotel affiliation—the current official site is Solei House.
