#4 of 7 hotels in Upper State Street by Axel's take. Upper State Street is #4 of 6 places to stay in Santa Barbara. The best hotels in Upper State Street, ranked · Where to stay in Santa Barbara

Axel's take: 7.8/10

A practical budget base with clean rooms, useful extras and some noise. A no-frills 2-star motel on Upper State Street, scored for what it is.

Sandpiper Lodge is a no-frills 2-star motel on Upper State Street, and we'd pick it for a practical Santa Barbara stay rather than atmosphere. Recent Expedia guests repeatedly praise clean, spacious rooms and welcoming staff; Booking.com's overall picture is positive too, though Tripadvisor is more mixed. Free parking, continental breakfast and a heated outdoor pool with a hot tub make this a useful base for travelers watching their budget.

The trade-offs are older furnishings, a basic breakfast and imperfect sound insulation. Guests on several sites mention upstairs footsteps, parking-lot activity or neighboring rooms, so light sleepers should request an upper-floor room away from the stairs. Restaurants and shops are nearby, but plan on driving or taking transport to downtown and the waterfront. We'd skip it for a polished romantic getaway or a beach-focused stay without a car.

  • Best for: Budget-minded travelers with a car; Families needing two-bedroom units; Short sightseeing stays

  • Watch out for: Footsteps and parking-lot noise; Older furnishings in some rooms; Basic continental breakfast

  • Location: Upper State Street near shops and restaurants; not a downtown or beachfront location.

  • Rooms: Generally spacious and comfortable, with microwaves and refrigerators; decor and sound insulation are weak spots.

  • Cleanliness: A consistent strength in recent reviews, despite some reports of worn interiors.

  • Service: Recent feedback strongly favors friendly, helpful staff and straightforward check-in.

  • Amenities: Heated outdoor pool, hot tub, small gym, free Wi-Fi and continental breakfast.

  • Fees and surprises: A deposit is required; free parking covers one vehicle per room, with no oversized trucks, trailers or RVs.
