#1 of 7 hotels in Upper State Street by Axel's take. Upper State Street is #4 of 6 places to stay in Santa Barbara. The best hotels in Upper State Street, ranked · Where to stay in Santa Barbara

Axel's take: 8.6/10

A cheerful motel that gets the basics right, with parking and noise trade-offs. A small, colorful budget motel on Upper State Street, scored for what it is.

Agave Inn is a 13-room budget motel with Mexican-inspired decor, not a full-service boutique hotel. It's a strong pick for travelers who want a clean, comfortable Santa Barbara base without paying for resort extras. Recent Tripadvisor and Expedia guests repeatedly praise the beds, cleanliness and helpful staff; Booking.com feedback reinforces that picture. Fridges and microwaves make the simple rooms more practical, and nearby cafes and grocery stores are handy.

The compromises are mostly motel ones: some rooms are compact, street-facing rooms can pick up traffic noise, and free onsite parking is limited enough that guests sometimes need overflow alternatives. Upstairs rooms require stairs. Downtown and the waterfront are a drive or bus ride away, rather than outside the door. We'd skip it for a beach-centered, car-free holiday or if guaranteed onsite parking matters.

  • Best for: Value-minded couples and solo travelers; Short stays and road trips; Travelers who prefer small, simple properties

  • Watch out for: Limited onsite parking; Traffic noise in street-facing rooms; No elevator to upstairs rooms

  • Location: Walkable Upper State Street dining and groceries; not in the downtown or waterfront core.

  • Rooms: Colorful, sometimes compact rooms with fridges and microwaves; two-bed rooms have doubles, not queens.

  • Cleanliness: A consistent strength across recent guest feedback on several sites.

  • Service: Helpful, responsive staff earn repeated praise; arrange late arrival ahead of time.

  • Amenities: Free Wi-Fi, air conditioning and some kitchenette options; no pool or full-service facilities.

  • Fees and surprises: Parking is free but limited; confirm overflow arrangements and any extra-bed charges.
