Axel's take: 8.0/10

A stylish beach-area base, with friendly staff but uneven quiet and privacy. A small adults-only boutique hotel near Ocean Park Beach, not a full-service luxury resort, scored for what it is.

The Weekender is a 23-room, adults-only boutique hotel whose strongest selling points are its leafy grounds, pool and walkable Ocean Park location. We'd pick it for beach days and exploring nearby restaurants rather than a full-service luxury stay. Booking.com and recent Expedia guests repeatedly praise comfortable, clean rooms and welcoming staff; newer feedback is particularly positive about the pool and hospitality.

The main compromises are soundproofing and room design. Guests across several sites describe audible garden music, wildlife and neighboring activity, while some rooms have bathrooms without proper doors. Housekeeping and finding someone at reception have also been inconsistent, although recent Expedia feedback suggests better service. Earlier reviews mention restaurant construction; the official site now advertises SÓN kitchen & cocktails. Light sleepers and anyone sharing who needs bathroom privacy should confirm the exact room layout before booking.

• Best for: Couples comfortable with open-plan rooms; Beachgoers exploring without a car; Travelers who prefer intimate boutique hotels

• Watch out for: Limited sound insulation; Bathrooms without doors in some rooms; Uneven housekeeping and reception availability

• Location: Walkable to Ocean Park Beach and Calle Loíza restaurants; not beachfront or in Old San Juan.

• Rooms: Attractive, generally comfortable rooms; bathroom privacy and sound insulation vary.

• Cleanliness: Mostly praised, especially in recent Expedia reviews, despite recurring earlier housekeeping misses.

• Service: Staff warmth is a consistent strength; reception has not always been continuously attended.

• Amenities: Pool, fitness center and free Wi-Fi; the official site now lists SÓN restaurant and cocktails.

• Fees and surprises: Nearby parking can carry a charge; confirm arrangements and your room's bathroom layout.
