El Colonial is a simple, adults-only boutique hotel in a historic Old San Juan building, strongest as a base for exploring rather than a place to spend all day. We'd pick it for the walkable location, sociable atmosphere and included 24-hour open bar. Tripadvisor and Expedia guests repeatedly praise the helpful staff, clean rooms and effective air-conditioning; the rooftop terrace adds another reason to linger outside your room.
The trade-offs are practical, not just cosmetic. Every room requires stairs, some interior rooms lack exterior views, and bathrooms can be small.
