Axel's take: 7.9/10

A fun couples’ getaway, provided you favor theatrical rooms over modern polish. An adults-only, mid-range inn with elaborate themed suites, scored for what it is.

Anniversary Inn’s 5th South location is an adults-only, mid-range inn built around 36 individually themed suites, not a conventional city hotel. It’s a strong pick for a short romantic escape if jungle scenery, castles or cowboy decor sound appealing. Expedia and Booking.com guests repeatedly praise the imaginative rooms, friendly staff and breakfast delivered to the suite; recent Expedia feedback is particularly positive about room cleanliness.

The trade-off is uneven polish. Worn carpets and dated furnishings recur in feedback, while Tripadvisor includes reports of faulty room features and slow hot water. Those complaints aren’t universal, but they make choosing the specific suite important. There’s no elevator, and Ruby and Emerald suites have a late 5 p.m. check-in; Diamond suites start at 3 p.m. We’d skip it for families, travelers needing step-free access or anyone wanting predictable, contemporary hotel comfort.

• Best for: Couples celebrating an occasion; One-night romantic staycations; Travelers who enjoy themed rooms

• Watch out for: Uneven upkeep and dated carpets; No elevator; 5 p.m. check-in for Ruby and Emerald suites

• Location: Near Trolley Square and the University of Utah, rather than in the downtown sightseeing core.

• Rooms: Distinctive themed suites and jetted tubs are the draw; condition and practical furnishings vary.

• Cleanliness: Recent Expedia guests mostly praise clean rooms, with some criticism of carpets and common areas.

• Service: Friendly, helpful staff earn repeated praise across Expedia and Booking.com.

• Amenities: Complimentary breakfast delivered daily, free parking, Wi-Fi and a video library.

• Fees and surprises: Security deposit required; early arrival and late departure can cost extra, with earlier check-in included for Diamond suites.
